Today in class we started chapter 3: From Hunters and Gatherers to Farmers.  In this chapter we will learn about the Neolithic Age, or the Agricultural Revolution, and how it has completely changed human development and how we live.  Here are the reading notes from chapter 3 (if a student loses these, they must print them out themselves):

Also, since we started chapter 3 I have assigned the chapter 3 illustrated dictionary.  This won’t be due until the end of the chapter:

Oct. 11th, 2017

Today in class we made a timeline of the history of the earth.  Kids tried to create one from prior knowledge, then we made a human timeline, watched a video, then fixed the timeline.  Here is the video we watched:

Then I explained more in detail the comic-book cover page project.  They need to make a comic-book cover page of a hominid of their choice.  They need to include details such as name, when and where they were, capabilities, and so on.  One thing no listed on the rubric is they need to have their 3 capabilities also drawn on the page as well.  This will be due Friday.  Here is the rubric:

Oct 10th, 2017

Today in class students worked on their CER (Claim, Evidence, Reasoning) answering the topic question:  Which of the hominid groups would win in a battle royal?!  Students had to make a claim, find evidence in the textbook, and then state their reasons.  This was due at the end of the hour.  Anyone who didn’t finish must do this at home and can turn it in tomorrow (no points off).  An example is found on the bottom of this page:

CER hominid

Today also, the dictionary for chapter 2 was turned in and I checked their chapter 2 reading notes.

Tomorrow we will watch some videos and then have some time to work on their projects making a comic-book cover page for one of the hominid groups.  This will be due Friday (I will explain more about it tomorrow).

Today we finished the last section in chapter 2, section 6: Homo Sapiens Sapiens and we learned about their capabilities for survival.  We then answered the essential question for the chapter.

Tomorrow we will work on a CER assignment and then they will receive their small project they will do for this chapter, which will be summative points.

Tomorrow, the chapter 2 illustrated dictionary is due!  If you can’t print it, I need a signed note from a parent saying that you have no access to a printer.  Here is the dictionary:

Today in class we talked about what is BCE and CE, and discussed how our textbook uses those abbreviations instead of BC and AD.  I went over a power point, watched a video, and then they worked on a worksheet to help their timeline, BCE/CE skills.  The worksheet was due at the end of the hour (if they didn’t finish, they can work on it at home).

Sept 29th, 2017

Yesterday students took the Chapter 1 test.  Those grades have been entered into the grade book.  I also checked their chapter 1 reading notes, and checked their bellwork from September 11th till yesterday.  Those all have also been entered into the grade book.  If there are any mistakes in the grade I entered and what I gave you in class, please let me know.  Make sure to keep all assignments in your binder even after I grade them.

When students were finished they worked on their chapter 2 illustrated dictionaries.  This won’t be due for another week or so when we finish the chapter, but they can get a jump start on it.  Here is the dictionary:

ch2 illustrated dictionary

I will NOT give them this dictionary.  They can either do it on loose leaf paper, print off the sheet and write it out, or type it out on a google doc.  If they type it out, they MUST print it off themselves, I will not print it for them.  ALL DRAWINGS MUST BE HAND DRAWN!  They may not copy and paste an image into their dictionary.

Today we worked on an “archaeologist/detective” activity.

NO HOMEWORK

Thank you, have a great weekend!
