Holiday Fun Reminder
Dear Parent(s),
Just a friendly reminder that on this Friday’s afternoon Zoom we will be having some “Holiday Fun”. As noted on our Weekly Lesson Plan we are asking students to join in the fun with wearing pajamas, a holiday shirt, and a Santa or elf hat/headband that day. Or wear all of the above!!!
For Friday’s writing we will be creating a “Sweet Story” as noted on our Weekly Lesson Plan. We are asking students to bring one small item like a peppermint candy, a small candy cane, a single wrapped candy, or whatever works to toss (a coin, button, a Cheerio, etc… to class. We will be using this item to play a fun writing game which involves creating a wacky “Sweet Story”. We need them to have this ready to go in their workspace on Friday.
We have also had discussions, throughout the week, on what “special snack” they could bring to the afternoon Zoom meeting too! The “special snack” should be special to your child. Some examples we talked about are chips, holiday cookies, pudding, candy, hot chocolate, pop, etc…
Students seem excited about being able to celebrate and have some holiday fun “Zoom Style”. Thanks for your help and support with this.
Last, during the holiday season I hope for everyone to be healthy and well, to enjoy time with family during the holidays, find time to rest, to laugh, and find the joy that this holiday season brings. I feel honored to have your children in my Zoom. I care about each and everyone of them and look forward to working with you all in the new year. Have a Happy New Year and see you in 2021!
Take care,
Katie Robins

Reading Logs-Begin Next Monday!!!
Here is a copy of the letter that was in your childś green folder at Materials Pick Up this week.
November 5, 2020
READING LOGS
Today you will find copies of your child’s Weekly Reading Logs (in your child’s green folder they were given at Material Pick- Up). These reading logs will count as a part of your child’s homework grade. Recording reading for Weekly Reading Logs will begin next week on Monday, November 9th. They will need to be turned in no later than the following Monday (For example, Monday November 16th).
Second graders should be reading at least 20 minutes every night. Please help your child to keep up with reading at least 4 to 5 days a week. On the “Reading Log,” please record the date, the book title(s) and/or chapter read if your child is in a chapter book, and parent signature. You may be writing down more than one book a night. Please use one space per book or per chapter if your child is reading a chapter book. PLEASE ONLY RECORD BOOKS YOUR CHILD HAS READ INDEPENDENTLY. This log is to show what they are working on independently. We still encourage your child being read to, but for the Reading Log we are asking you to ONLY RECORD BOOKS THAT HE OR SHE HAS READ. Some nights you might not fill out the Monthly Reading Log because that is a night you may have read to your child.
Leveled books will be provided in Benchmarks for your child. During Learning Labs we have been exploring these books and we will eventually have each child begin his or her own library in Benchmarks. Don’t forget… our school library will also have book checkout too!
Together in class, we have been working on the skill of picking “good fit” books. To help your child pick “good fit” books at home please refer to the I-PICK chart/bookmark attached to this note, and keep it for future reference.
Please keep in mind that reading is a strategic process. Predicting, making mistakes, self-correcting, and confirming are part of the process.
Here are a few ideas to use when supporting your child’s reading.
1. When your child comes to a word he or she doesn’t know, suggest rereading the first part of the sentence, using the beginning and ending sounds, and/or looking for chunks you know.
2. Ask questions: “Does it make sense?” “Does that sound right?” “Does the beginning sound of the word match the word you think it is?”
3. It is alright to tell your child a word after he or she has tried various strategies.
4. Continue to encourage your child to retell the stories they have read. They can do the retelling at the end of reading a paragraph, a chapter, or even when they have completed a book. If you would like to challenge your child even more have them retell the story in writing. When retelling the story please encourage your child to use character names, tell what happened, and use guiding words such as “in the beginning, then, next, after, in the end.”
5. ALWAYS KEEP THIS SPECIAL READING TIME POSITIVE!

Updated Parent Teacher Conference Sign Up Genius
Parent(s), please resign up for your child’s parent teacher conference on this new Sign Up Genius. You will find the new updated link on the email I sent to you today. The old Sign Up Genius will not be available or used since several students were signed up at the same time slot. Again, I apologize for the inconvenience. Conferences will be held on my class Zoom. You can get into the Zoom through Schoology in your child’s account. You can do this by either going on through your child’s account on your child’s Chromebook, through the Schoology app you may have already downloaded on your phone to turn in assignments, or through the Dearborn Public Schools sight under Student and Schoology. Thanks again for your patience and help.
2nd Marking Period Folder Clean Out!
Parent(s), this morning students and I spent a lot of time going through our RED and BLUE folders that were given to them at the two Materials Pick Ups this year. We have them organized to help with finding the items needed for learning during the 2nd Marking period. I highly encourage making a place or space (if you have not already done so) for your child to organize and keep their items so they are ready to go for Zoom daily. Much time is wasted when students are unable to find the materials needed for the lessons. In addition to the items in their folders I would suggest having a couple of dry erase markers, pencils, a highlighter, coloring tools, a glue stick, and scissors. They will also need their 3 Math Books in this space too (Learning, Practice, and Succeed), and also their compostion book. Many of these items were suggested on the suggested supply list provided in the beginning of the school year. Here is what your child needs to have in the RED and BLUE folders to begin a successful 2nd Marking Period of 2nd Grade.
BLUE
Characters Facing Challenges (Texts for Close Reading Book)
3 Page science packet ((Parts of the Plant Song, and two plant activity sheets)
Second Grade Social Studies Unit 2 Packet
Dry Erase Sleeve/Board (orange and white papers inside)
Zearn Passcode Card and Letter (Please make sure that your child has this in a safe place so that they are able to login to Zearn. Thanks!)
RED
Plants and Animals in Their Habitats
Leader in Me Student Guide/Book
Leader in Me packet
Please review the folders with your child. This will help with a great start to the 2nd Marking Period.
Don’t forget that tomorrow is another Materials Pick Up Day for Students (School Blog).
Thanks to much!
