Help your child become a better READER- Questions to ask your child while reading fiction text and nonfiction text.

Parents,

As you know we are asking 2nd graders to read 4 to 5 days a week for a least 20 minutes, and record the reading they do independently on their monthly reading log.

Today you will find a bright pink paper attached inside your child’s Everyday Folder. Please keep it attached in there. Thanks so much! It is part of the 2nd Grade Reading Plan. It will be right behind your child’s new November Reading Log. It is two sided. One side of the paper has a list of questions you could ask your child when they are reading a fiction text and on the other side there is a list of questions you could ask your child when they are reading a non-fiction text. Using these questions with your child is a helpful way to promote book talks and to have your child share what they know about the book they are reading.

Currently, 2nd grade students are moving from giving verbal responses on the reading they do in class to giving written responses to the reading they do in class. At school your child responds to reading in many ways. One way students respond to reading in class is by writing their reading response in their person Reading Response Log. Students love to share their response logs with classmates too. To help your child with reading and reading responses at home you could also have them practice responding to some of the books that they read by writing responses too!

Parents often ask how can I help my child in reading? So I am sending home this fiction and nonfiction book question sheet in hopes to help give parents something to support their child’s reading as home. It’s great to talk about books and to dig deeper to understand your child’s understanding of the text they are reading. I hope you enjoy this useful tool. Thanks so much! Happy reading!!!
