By the end of the Kindergarten students typically

*Follow 1-2 step oral directions

*Ask/answer questions

*Ask for information

*Make comments

*Engage in 2-way conversations

*Initiate and sustain a topic

*Retell events  and stories

By the end of First Grade students typically –

*Talk in complete sentences when sharing thoughts/ideas

*Use most part of speech and grammar correctly

*Ask/answer all “wh” questions

*Follow 2-3 step directions

*Give directions

*Stay on topic when talking

By the end of 2nd Grade students typically –

*Use more complex sentences when talking

*Answer questions about a story

*Predict what will happen in a story

*Begin & end conversations properly

By the end of 3rd Grade students typically –

*Listen well in groups

*Understand what is taught in class

*Ask/answer questions about books

*Stay on topic

*Use words taught in subjects across the curriculum

By the end of 4th Grade students typically –

*Listen for important details in conversations and stories

*Understand/use figures of speech

*Base their opinions on facts

*Summarize information in the correct order

*Have discussions with groups of friends and adults

By the end of 5th Grade students typically –

*Listen and make conclusions in subjects across the curriculum

*Plan and make class presentations

*Use facial expressions, gestures, and an engaging voice during presentations
