Well, January was certainly an eventful weather month. Hopefully, February will be calmer and we can return to a more normal schedule. Let me update you on what is happening.
Reading– The children are doing a good job on their reading. Reading every night is very important, so please keep it up. By the end of third grade, the children should be reading at a level 38. Remember to ask your children about what they are reading, it helps with their comprehension. Also, read to your children. They really enjoy it!
Writing– We are working on a research paper on Solar Power. The children are learning how to use reference materials, as well as citing sources in their paper. Mrs. McCarty is re-enforcing these skills by having the children research Famous Black Americans.
Cursive Writing– We are learning many letters and are able to write many sentences. We need to be careful how we form our letters, as well as how big we write. We will keep practicing.
Spelling– Spelling City is a great resource to use to practice spelling. They have many great activities.
Math– EverydayMathOnline has many games and activities that your child can use to practice their skills. We are working on geometry right now and will be moving on to multiplication/division soon. By the end of third grade, your child needs to know their multiplication facts through the tens. This will be a big help for them in fourth grade.
Science– Our focus is Earth Science.
Social Studies– We are learning about the government. The Three Branches of Government, our court system, the Constitution and the Core Democratic Values.
Remember that the websites– Raz-Kids, MobyMax, SumDog, XtraMath etc. are great for the children to use during these cold wintry days. It helps them strengthen their skills as well as helps them to become more familiar with the computer as a learning tool. Ask them to tell you about the search engines the are using in their research. You might want to research something together as a family, it would be a fun time and increase your child’s computer skills.
Our Ice Cream Sundae Valentine Party will be Friday, February 14 at 2:30.
Winter Break is the week on February 17th.
