The Study of Human Migration to the United States
Part A. STUDY
~1800 – 1940s Migration took place for many Europeans to the United States of America. Most traveled by boat.
- Examples of Push factors: war, famine, no jobs
- New York is a port of entry for people to the United States.
- A geographer would ask Why have people moved to Michigan?
- Factories are an example of industry.
- In 2008, the automobile industry was a major cause of people leaving the state of Michigan because of the loss of jobs.
- Maps of public transportation show how someone can travel from one city to another by public trains, subways,bus or trolley systems.
- Noise polution is caused by traffic, airports and shops. Air pollution is caused by peopls.
- 8. A Navigation system (Like GPS or Google Maps) is a geographical system that helps you drive to destinations.
- Recycling helps put less waste in landfills.
~Migration also occurred in America during the 1840s with the Underground Railroad
- Enslaved Africans in the south sang songs to give directions about how to escape to the north.
- The song, “Follow the drinkin gourd” was a code for follow the stars (like the Big Dipper) as a guide to the North for enslaved people.
~Westward Migration took place in the late 1800s and early 1900s because people were running out of space, lack of jobs and people had to adjust/adapt to new environments.
- The people of The Great Plains used sod for their houses because it was a natural resource in the area. People used materials for their houses based on their geographic location. They adapted to new environments.
- Removal of the Potawatomi forced them to migrate to different states during this time too. This group remains close to this day by going to a tribal reunion.
Part B. Short Answer
- Why does Michigan have the ability to grow a greater variety of crops than Canada?
- In the United States, Growing seasons are longer in the South than the North. Why?
- The Underground Railroad was a secret route used by enslaved people to migrate. Using your notes, identify a Michigan person who helped and tell what they did.
Give a push and a pull factor that drove people to use the Underground Railroad.
Tell why Michigan was an important stop on the railroad.
Part C. Essay
Answer the questions. Make sure you address both points.
- Many people migrate from one country to another. What is an important reason why many of these people want to leave their countries and why do they choose to come to the United States?
