We completed our first Social Studies test online on Friday. The results will be sent to me and I can share them with you at conferences. Students worked very hard as there were 12 questions that had multiple answers. Students worked hard and did well.

Homework:
Reading for 20 minutes each night and spelling. You can practice spelling any way you like. The ideas on the paper that were sent home in the beginning of the year were just to give you some ideas. Practice the spelling words any way you’d like.

Math will also come home Monday-Thursday. We are studying addition and subtraction with measurement. If per chance a math sheet does not come home, you can give your child things to measure in centimeters and meters and have them explain which measurements would be best to measure certain things.

Conferences:
Parent/teacher conferences will be coming up on November 8th and 2 days the following week. I will post a copy of the conferences outside the classroom door and you can come in to sign up anytime. I can also assign you a time if you have a flexible evening schedule.

Have a wonderful week. Feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.

Recess:
Students go out for recess for 20 minutes at lunch and 15 minutes in the afternoon. As the weather gets colder, please remember warm coats, gloves or mittens, and hats. Thank you!

Weekly News For the Week of September 17, 2018

Good Morning!

Welcome back to a new week. 2nd graders are working hard to follow all procedures and rules here in 2nd grade. Some of the rules we have been focusing on are:

Listen while the teacher is talking.
Follow directions the first time they are given.
Use kind words.
Keep hands and feet to yourself.
Adjust your voice level to the activity.

Ask your child how they think they are doing with following the rules.

Students have also been working on these procedures:

Morning procedures: Students come in, turn in their homework, make their lunch choice, get prepared for the day, sit down, and begin their morning work.
Hallways: Students practice walking quietly and in a straight line. We always to say to check themselves before walking in the hall for a fish tail, bubble, and straight line:)))

What to do when the teacher needs your attention: STop, look at your teacher, and listen.

Transition from one activity to the other: In order to make the most of our classroom time, students have a agreed to get to the assigned areas as quickly and quietly as possible.

Clean Up at the end of the day: STudents are working hard to organize homework and anything else they need to take home. When they are sure that they have all of their things, they sit down, we review what we have learned that day. Lastly we line up to walk out to our departure spot.

There have been many procedures to practice. Make a fun game out of asking your child how well they know the rules, procedures, etc.

Thank you for discussing these rules and procedures with your children, discussing their importance, and following on Class Dojo for messages and updates:)

Rewards are:

Extra minutes for recess.

Positive dojo points for parents to see.

Classroom celebrations like ice cream, pizza, or movie party.

This week:

Spelling:

Spelling List #4
1. Cap
2. cape
3. back
4. bake
5. ate
6. mad
7. made
8. ham
9. tape
10. late

Writing: Students have been learning narrative writing. Narrative writing has characters, setting, dialogue, sensory detail, problem, solution, lesson or theme. We are drafting stories about our summer as we go through the writing process.

Science: We will need the following supplies for a science experiment this week. Please send in by Wednesday:) a paper towel
a paper plate (a cheap, flexible one is best)
a paper lunch bag
a square of aluminum foil (about 12” square)
a 3-foot piece of thick string, yarn, or ribbon
a large rubber band (the bigger the better)
two clothespins (if you don’t have clothespins, you can substitute hair clips or binder clips)
a pencil (for writing on the worksheet)

Social STudies: We are studying our community. Some important vocabulary are food, shelter, clothing: our families provide these essential basic needs. We move on from that topic to things the community provides: businesses, government, physical characteristics, natural characteristics, etc.

Math: Adding, subtracting like units and other adding and subtracting activities. One is the ‘make ten” strategy. For example, we can make 10 in the problem 9+4=13 by making the 9 a 10 by adding 1 from the 4. If you add 1 to the 9, you take away from the 4 make it a 3. 10+3 then is 13. Teaching our children math these days is different from the way we learned. Research is showing though that concept development of adding and subtracting will improve when done this way:)

Wednesday, September19, 2018: Late start. School will begin at 9:35 that morning.

Have a wonderful week!

Sincerely,
Gina Parana
