It’s been a busy couple of weeks. Students have been working hard! Below is a list of all the things we’ve been learning about:
Math: Lots of addition practice in the last couple of weeks through lessons and games.
Writing: We’ve talked about the writing process: planning, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing. Many students are working on their published pieces. I will send them home to finish if students haven’t finished by Friday. That way students can have the weekend and the 3 days next week to finish. Some students have already finished their published pieces. Parents who want extra writing practice can have their kids write at home over the 3 day break.
Reading: Great job with the reading homework. It’s very important for kids to be reading each night, reading books that are just right for them, not too hard and not too easy. Students have been working and practicing strategies such as: chunking the sounds, stretching sounds and rereading, asking important details such as who, what, when, where, why, and how. We also practiced what fluent reading sounds like. Fluent reading should sound expressive and sound like someone talking.
Spelling: We’ve been looking at parts of words and noticed how knowing a word or chunk of a word can help a student read and write new words that look like the known word.
Science: We’ve been learning about the needs of plants and the life cycle of plants: seed, plant, flower, fruit.
Social Studies: We’ve been learning about citizens in the community and what makes a good citizen. We discussed respect and responsibility of citizens in the Dearborn community.
Popcorn/Bake Sale: October 18th is our popcorn/bake sale. Thank you so much for the notification of baked good parents will be sending in. All of the money earned can be applied to classroom supplies, books, etc.
Field Trip: We will go on a field trip to the Dearborn Fire House on Monday, October 28th from 12;30-2:30. A permission slip will come home soon.
Halloween Party: We will have a Halloween party on Thursday, October 31. Details will come home in a note soon.
I’ll be sending home the math log in cards soon. This way, parents can print the Home Links at home after reading the blog about what home link to print. If anyone does not have a printer please let me know and I can make your child a copy.
Have a great weekend!
Sincerely,
Gina Parana
