Welcome Back!

Hi Families,

Wow, what a winter we are having!  I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday break with family and friends!

Wednesday, January 8th is a late start day.  School will begin at 9:40.  We also have library check out so please have library books returned to school tomorrow.  Students will keep their nonfiction books as we are using them to take notes on the Very Important Points.

Spelling:  We will review old spelling words due to the short week.

Math:  This week we will take a look at polygons.  Polygons are shapes that are made up of straight sides, sides meet at their endpoints.  The endpoints are called a vertex.  Any two sides that meet form an angle.  We will also examine quadrangles and symmetry this week.

We will also play games to build math fluency for addition and subtraction.

Reading and Daily 5:  This week we will take a look at fables and folktales.  Fables are stories that have a central message where a lesson can be learned from the story.  Fables and folktales are stories that were told orally long ago.  We will also take a look at our comprehension, stopping as we are reading to answer questions such as who, what, when, where, why, etc.

Keep up the great work with reading at home.  Parents are doing a great job listening to their child read as well as asking their child comprehension questions as they read.

Science:  We continue to learn about landforms; mountains, valleys, rivers, lakes, etc.

Social Studies:  We will be looking at the natural and human characteristics of our community and learning about positive and negative consequences of these characteristics:  such as what are the positive consequences of building more businesses on open land and what are the negative consequences of these actions.

We will see everyone tomorrow!  Enjoy your last day of break and stay safe and warm!

Sincerely,

Gina Parana

The Parana Post 12/19

Hi Families,

I would like to wish everyone a wonderful holiday break.  I would also like to thank everyone for all of the wonderful thoughts, gifts, and cards.  Your children mean so much to me.  They are my school family and I think of them all of the time.

I have sent a letter with some things you can do over the holidays to keep education going throughout the 2 week break.

Some additional ideas are:

Read books from the library and write a summary of what the book was about, think of questions they may have before they go on, write a letter pretending to be the character and give details about what is happening.

Math:  In addition to the ideas in the note sent home you can play addition top it with your children.  Take a deck of cards.  Player 1 takes 2 cards and adds them.  Player 2 takes 2 cards and says the answer.  Whoever has the greater answer gets to keep all the cards.  Play until all the cards are gone.  The person with the most cards wins.

Practice 2 digit addition with regrouping/trading.

Writing:

Write a thank you note to Santa and anyone else that gave a gift.

Write about your favorite things to do in the winter.

Complete the snowman writing project due on January 6th.

Have a great break!  Thank you for everything!

Sincerely,

Gina Parana
