March is Reading Month Calendar

It looks like everyone is doing great reading every night and recording their books and minutes on the March is Reading Month Calendar. The reading log is due every Friday and will then be returned back to your child to read for the other weeks. We can always make extra copies too if your child needs another copy. The class that gets the most reading logs turned in gets a pizza party!! So keep up the great reading!

Sincerely,
Gina Parana

I hope everyone got a chance to see the progress your child has made during the 2nd card marking. Please send me a note either by email or paper to let me know you’ve received the report card.

This week:
Spelling: We will concentrate on the th, tch, ch, and ea chunk. Thanks for practicing each week!

Math: We will begin double digit subtraction with and without regrouping.

Science: We will learn about the world’ oceans and the water cycle.

Social Studies: We will study why people form governments and why we have laws.

Language Arts: We will study cause and effect while reading. The cause is what makes something happen. The effect is what happens. Look for a parent pipeline this week that will help you ask your child the right kinds of questions while practicing this strategy.

Writing: We are publishing our informational writing into an “All About Book.” We will then share our information with our Kindergarten friends. Our published copy will then go into our writing portfolio.

Have a great week and thank you for any questions you may have at this time.

Sincerely,
Gina Parana

The Parana Post

I hope everyone enjoyed the “cold days” that we had! Hopefully we don’t have anymore of these cold days!

This week was short but we still had lots to do! First we’ll have a couple of reminders:
1. Reading Homework: Thank you for reading each night with your child. Children become better readers by reading more and more with just the right type of book. Thank you for returning the calendars each Friday morning!

2. Communication: I love that we can all communicate by email or through the blog, before or after school. I am always here early for parents who have questions before school. It is more difficult to talk during the school day as it interrupts teaching and learning. If your child has an after school activity to go to please remind them that morning so they know ahead of time. I understand some parents work early and such but calling the classroom during school hours can interrupt our teaching and learning. Thank you for your understanding!

3. Book orders: February book orders are due this Monday, February 3rd.

4. Valentine’s Day:
We will pass out Valentine’s to our friends on Friday, February 14th and do a learning activity with candy hearts. You can get a head start on working with your child to decorate a cereal box or shoe box so that they can store their Valentine’s in the box. You can use construction paper, wrapping paper, etc.

5. Homework today: We don’t have a Home Link today but you can always visit the Everyday Math site to play games or abcya.com. Of course, it’s always a bonus to read on Sunday nights as well!

Have a great weekend!

Sincerely,
Gina Parana

Wednesday, January 22nd News

Boy is it cold out there!  I am counting down the days until spring!

Today’s Homework will be:

Math Journal pg.  127 if students don’t finish in the morning and Home Link 6.2.  I have made a Home Link book for each child for Unit 6.  Please complete the highlighted page and return the book the next day.  Thank you.

Social Studies:  We will also be having a short Social Studies quiz.  Most of the material will be reviewed in class.  I am sending home a little booklet that students can review for the short quiz tomorrow.  They will also  need to give examples of postive consequences and negative consequences in regards to interacting with the community such as picking up litter..,.give examples of positive consequences to those actions, etc.  They will need to know that a community is smaller than a state and the order:  community to state to country.

Have a great day and let me know if you have any questions!

Science Night is tonight from 7-8.  Hope to see you there!

Library is today!  Don’t forget your library books!

Sincerely,

The Parana Post 1/17

It’s been a great week!  We had a great time on our field trip.  The kids did a great job and enjoyed the play.  It tied in nicely with our common core when we write about opinions and also narratives:  characters, setting, problem, solution, plot, and events.  It was a good way to see all of those elements coming into action.

Next week we don’t have school on Monday due to Martin Luther Kind day.

Tuesday and Wednesday are full days and Thursday is a half day, dismissal time is at 11:45.

Friday:  No school due to a professional development day for teachers.

Tuesday we will have a math test covering fact families, putting numbers into order from smallest to largest, making parallel line segments, and knowing our shapes.  A review is being sent home today to go over shapes.  I also sent home a 2 digit regrouping paper for kids to practice on Monday.

Have a great weekend!

Sincerely,

Gina Parana
