Weeks 10 and 11

Last week (Week 10) we were able to review and finish the 4th Lesson in our first unit. We also took a quiz on our bell-work skill of finding the GCF (greatest common factor) between two numbers. The first card marking came to a close on Friday, November 2. The second half of the week was the start of our final lesson in the first unit, where students are solving problems with percents.

This week we are finishing up Lesson 5. We will be taking the practice test on Thursday and the quiz will take place on Friday. Now that this lesson is done, we will be looking forward to taking the Unit test next week (Wednesday), which will cover all of the lessons we have gone over this year. Our topic for Bell-work has also changed this week. We have shifted from GCF to LCM (least common multiple). We will be spending a few weeks on this topic before a quiz comes up.

Conferences will be held next week on Monday and Wednesday. Due to time constraints, these conferences will be STUDENT LED. It is important that your student comes with you. We will be taking time this week to fill out a form in class that students will be able to reflect upon when meeting with you. I will be available for questions after you have met with your student first.

Things to remember:

  • If you have not signed up to be in my remind class, I suggest you do so! I send home frequent homework reminders and also reminders to get in their minutes for Khan Academy each week.
  • Students should be getting 30 minutes each week of time on their Khan Academy accounts. To be able to see the time they logged, they MUST login with Clever on the Dearborn student resources page.
  • If your student forgets the homework assignment or loses their copy of the pages, I always post them in the Google Classroom app that the students have access to. They can print the pages at home so they don’t fall behind.
  • If you ever have any questions or concerns please feel free to e-mail me directly at osaka@dearbornschools.org

Week 9

Last week we finished up our third lesson of Unit 1 with a quiz and took the mid unit assessment as well. We will be starting Lesson 4 this week. It focuses on solving more problems where you find the unit rate. On Friday, I sent home progress reports for students that were getting a 75% or less in the class (before the mid-unit assessment). Students are expected to return these with a parent signature tomorrow. Grades have all been updated so please do a grade check on your student.

IMPORTANT NOTES:

Weeks 6, 7, and 8.

We have been very busy lately! I apologize for keeping you in suspense for 2 weeks. Here is what we have been up to…

October 1-5 We finished up our second lesson of the first unit. This lesson was all about finding the unit rate when given a set of numbers to compare. Students were expected to turn in pages 9-16 from their Practice and Problem Solving Books on Friday (October 5th). They started the quiz for Lesson 2  on Friday. Most students were able to complete it during class. During the time they were taking the quiz, I check their Interactive Student Notebooks for the vocabulary definitions that were assigned on September 18th. We also did a CER activity together to get an idea of how to make a claim and prove it in writing for math problems.

October 8-12 We finished the quiz on Monday. We started looking at the next lesson on equivalent ratios. We will be done with this lesson and taking the quiz next week on Wednesday or Thursday next week. We took a quiz this week on our bellwork topic (Greatest Common Factor) that we have been working on for 2 weeks.

Coming up: Next week we will be focusing on finishing our third lesson from the unit and taking the quiz. We will be moving on to lesson 4 which will be all about solving problems with unit rate.

Week 5

This week we are finishing up our first full lesson from our textbooks! Students will have a quiz on ratios this week (Wednesday or Thursday). They also were given a project today on ratios that will be due Friday. Along with the ratios project on Friday, students will also need to have the vocabulary and the iLearn basic skills assessments complete (they had 2 weeks on these).

If you have not signed up for my updates on Remind please contact me (or ask your child) for the information. I send home daily reminders for homework and other information as well. If students do not have what they need to complete homework at home, I have sent blank copies to our Google Classroom page which every student has access to via the clever app.

And Finally, please be sure that your student completes 1/2 hour on Khan Academy each week. They will need to login with Clever to be sure that the minutes will show up on my end. If you have any questions please feel free to email me osaka@dearbornschools.org or reach out to me on the remind app.

Have a great week!

Weeks 3/4

Sorry for the delay in my weekly post! Last week we completed our setup for our Interactive Student Notebooks along with some goal setting using our most recent NWEA scores. We also started really getting into content and learning how our lessons will be setup. Students had their first content related homework assignment which was due on Thursday (9/13).

This week we will continue our practice lessons to prepare us to start lesson 1 with our new textbooks on Thursday. If you have not returned the note about replacing our textbooks, please get them in as soon as possible. They were sent home with students on Monday the 17th (I will attach an extra copy to this blog post).

A few assignments were given today to have completed by September 28th. They were definitions for the list of vocabulary words in this unit and the 4 assessments posted on the iLearn site.

Other than that, please be sure that students complete 30 minutes of Khan Academy each week. I will be checking and updating grades each Sunday.

Please feel free to e-mail me with any questions osaka@dearbornschools.org and be sure to get my updates on the Remind app as well.

Thank you for your support,

Mrs. Osak

Week 2

This week we took the NWEA test. This test is a starting point for the year to see what your student truly knows after summer break. We also took some time to start working in our Interactive Student Notebooks (ISN).

Please review the supply list from my last post and make sure that your child has all supplies necessary to be successful this year. We are going to be starting content this week so they will need these supplies every day.

Welcome! Week 1

Welcome to 6th grade and Mrs. Osak’s class! I am very excited to get this year started! This week we are talking a lot about rules and expectations for the school year. We also are taking a little bit of time to get to know one another. A syllabus and supply list were sent home on Tuesday this week. Students were asked to have their parent sign and return the syllabus by Tuesday, September 4th.
