In order to provide students opportunities to work with community organizations and participate in experiences that support efforts to help those that are less fortunate, our Student Council will be participating in the Goodfellows Newspaper Sales on Friday, December 6. Students will be selling the newspapers at all four corners surrounding the school during drop off from 8:20 until 8:40 in the morning. Please help them in their fundraising efforts by dropping a donation in their buckets as you pass by. Thank you in advance for your support!
I hope everyone had a restful and happy Thanksgiving!!
Tomorrow is our field trip to the DIA. For this trip, please pack your child a sandwich in a bag labeled with their name. They should also bring a water bottle labeled with their name. Our plan is to have a very quick and light lunch with their sandwiches at the DIA, then they can eat the remainder of their lunches when they return to school. We will be back just after 1.
Remember, the goal of the DIA field trip is to incorporate our Project-Based Learning life science project. Students will be looking for the animal they chose for their project in art work, and finding pieces of art that inspire them to create their own piece back at school/home.
We took the first page of our Mid-Module 3 assessment today. We will be taking the rest on Wednesday. Please continue to look over the review with your child. Next up is division.
Spelling/vocabulary words are on Flocabulary and written in the student planners. We are also finishing up reading group books with a culminating project (except one group) before we begin our next book.
We had an AMAZING time at the Detroit Zoo on Wednesday! The students saw so many active animals- the tigers were busy running around, deer were playing, and seals were swimming all over the place!! Everyone got a nice Detroit Zoo hat and gloves, as well as a yummy lunch. Thank you so much to Mrs. Eberwein, Mrs. Farhat, and Mr. Smith for chaperoning π We had a blast! Here are some pictures:
We are so excited about our field trip to the zoo tomorrow. A few reminders: Students should dress for the weather, including a warm coat, hat, and gloves. I do not think they will need boots, as the snow is mostly melted and the zoo has cleared the sidewalks. That is up to you and your child! Lunch WILL be provided, but students may bring a snack to eat when we return to school tomorrow afternoon. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to learn about animals and their adaptations, as we begin our Project-Based Learning unit on animals! Your child will be choosing an animal to study in detail. Hopefully they get an up-close view of their animal tomorrow π
Our concert is this Thursday, November 21. Mrs. Bagnall has done a wonderful job preparing them for the performance! Please have students in my classroom at 5:45 PM on Thursday, as the concert will start promptly at 6. We are also asking that you wait until the end of the concert for the big 4th/5th grade finale, and then I will be walking the students back to my classroom. Please pick up your child from my room so that I can make sure everyone is accounted for and that everyone is going home with their parent.
Finally, Picture Retake Day is this Friday (November 22) if anyone needs or wants their pictures retaken.
Spelling/vocabulary words for the week: adaptation, thrive, survive, camouflage, cactus, desert, rainforest, protection, environment.
I hope everyone enjoyed their super early snow day yesterday! π It was definitely a nice surprise.
A few reminders for the week–
Conferences are going to be held tomorrow (November 14) as scheduled. If your conference was originally scheduled for yesterday, the district is working on a new date. It will be either Monday or Wednesday next week. My hope is to keep everyone’s time slot from yesterday the same, just on a different date. I will let you know as soon as I know!
Our zoo field trip is next week, November 20. Our concert will be Thursday, November 21. We are very excited about both events!
Spelling/vocabulary words for the week are related to social studies and human/environment interaction. The words are: adapt, aqueduct, climate, elevation, environment, modify, fossil fuel, natural resource, landform, and pollute.
Students just finished up their first passage-based writing assignments. They did an amazing job analyzing the points of view from a story we read in class. Their writing is really maturing! If you have conferences this week or next, take a look at your child’s writing hanging on our bulletin board. π
There are many ways to practice, but please make sure your child is fluent in their facts so they can continue to be successful as we work with the standard algorithm for multiplication and division.
Finally, a big shout-out to ALL our Student Council candidates! They all did an AMAZING job presenting their speeches to the class. Although Ali Yassine is our new class senator, they are ALL winners in my mind. π Congratulations!! A big congratulations also to Mona, who is Mrs. Thomas’s Artist of the Month!!
As always, please email me with any questions. Have a great week!
SAVE THE DATE The 4th & 5th Grade Vocal Music Concert is on November 21 (Thursday)Β at 6:00 P.M. in the Howard School Gym. Students should report to their classrooms by 5:45. There is no school for students on Tuesday, November 5.
Conferences will be held this week and next. Your child received a conference reminder today with your scheduled date and time. Please return the slip to me as soon as possible so I can make any necessary changes.
We are into the second card marking!! Please continue to practice multiplication facts at home so that your child is fluent. This will help them out as we work on multiplying two and three-digit numbers. Please also make sure they are caught up on Zearn through at least Module 3, Lesson 4.
Spelling words for the week: Arctic, ability, climate, disease, glide, origin, journey, resident, steer, and volunteer. Students will be responsible for the spelling and meaning of each word.
Here are some pictures from the Halloween party last week!! Thank you SO much to all of the moms who helped us make this event spectacular! A special thanks to Mrs. Eberwein and Mrs. Swider for all the planning, as well as Mrs. Farhat and Mrs. Debouk for their assistance. π
Just in case of rain Thursday, please click the link below to read a letter from Mrs. Lazar that discusses procedures for the Halloween parade if there is inclement weather.
We will change into our costumes at school shortly before the party. Remember- no masks, no weapons, and no gory or scary face make-up. Thank you! π
A few reminders for this week: Tomorrow will be our social studies test. Students may return the review we worked on during class for a bonus point. I am also going to attach a review game here. In order to play, you would need to create a free Kahoot account as a parent, and log in to my game using the following link: https://create.kahoot.it/share/4th-grade-geography-review/7187a2ad-65a4-4012-aea6-da6dce7decee
Math- Module 2 assessments went home today. Please sign and return to me. As we begin Module 3, it is absolutely critical for your students to be practicing their multiplication facts at home! There are many online games that are useful, XtraMath, and flash cards. Please practice nightly with your child to help build this fact fluency.
Our spelling words are related to math this week. The list includes: square units, square, area, perimeter, formula, rectangle, length, multiply, and width.
