Chaperones for the boat trip on June 12
I submitted the names to Mrs. Srour and these are the parents that were chosen to go based on a raffle system. There is a possibility that more parents can go depending on available seats. Look for updates on my blog.

Field Day
We will not be doing a Green Party for the month of May. Instead we will be having Field Day for 90 minutes on June 10th. This is an earned event. Depending on behavior and responsibility, will depend on how much time students have to participate. For every strike a student gets, they will lose 5 minutes off their field day. A student will have receive a strike if they miss homework, forget to sign their planner, and or move their stick to yellow or orange. Make sure to check behavior in their planner. Please talk to your child about the importance of following directions and being responsible. Field Day is a fun event that no one wants to miss out on:)

Please Read
Dear Parents,
Technology, the internet, and social media have become a big part of all of our lives. From the moment we wake in the morning to the time we go to sleep, we can be overwhelmed with technology. That’s why I wanted to take a moment to share with you information about a social media trend that regrettably seems to be reaching elementary age children.
Over the past several years, a common trend on social media or through text messaging is to pose a “challenge” to the viewer of the video or reader of the text message. Perhaps you may recall the “ice bucket” challenge that was popular a few years back and helped to raise funds for ALS or more commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Most of the time, these “challenges” are done with the best intentions.
Unfortunately, there are those who choose to create and post “challenges” that can be dangerous and physically harmful. There have been news stories about the dangerous “challenges” that ask the viewer to consume certain products such as large amounts of cinnamon or even as outrageous as washing machine detergent. I have recently been told there is another one of these “challenge” videos going around that ask the viewer to perform acts of violence to others or to themselves. This is very distressing, especially to know that children as young as elementary age are being exposed to this type of disturbing behavior.
I’m sharing this information with you today not to alarm, panic, or spread of any rumors. Rather, I share this with you to communicate information that may be helpful to you as parents. I would also like to pass along a few simple tips that all parents can use when helping children safely navigate the internet and social media.
Basic guidelines for parental supervision:
- Spend time online together to teach your kids appropriate online behavior.
- Keep the computer in a common area where you can watch and monitor its use, not in individual bedrooms. Monitor any time spent on smartphones or tablets.
- Bookmark kids’ favorite sites for easy access.
- Check your credit card and phone bills for unfamiliar account charges.
- Find out what, if any, online protection is offered by your child’s school, after-school center, friends’ homes, or any place where kids could use a computer without your supervision.
- Take your child seriously if he or she reports an uncomfortable online exchange
We know our students are safe at home and we pride ourselves on creating a safe environment for your children when they are here at school. By working together we can ensure that our school will always be a safe place for learning.
Sincerely,
Lamis Srour
Principal, Geer Park Elementary School

Remind App.
I try to use the Remind app for short class announcements. Sometimes messages go unread and take long to send for some strange reason. I have it setup to only operate from 7am till 5pm. If you send me a message before or after that, then I will not receive it until the next school day/hours. I am really good about checking emails. Email me if you have any concerns or questions at salamim@dearbornschools.org
Regards:)

Important Note
Next Friday will be our monthly Green party. As we know, this party is an earned incentive. It is based on responsibility and behavior. Students are allowed to participate if they do not get 3 or more strikes for the month. An example of a strike includes, moving your clip down from green, not getting your planner signed and or not bringing in homework. I notified students today if they will be participating. Please congratulate your child if they are invited to the Green party and or have a discussion with them if they are not. This month will be pizza and movie. I also told them if we have ALL of the students participate for the month of February, then I will do movie and ice cream. This means that every student is held accountable for the party. Hopefully by them knowing their actions can impact the entire class will motivate them to do better. Thank you for the support. 🙂

Math Homework
I have received several messages about the homework and how parents can get extra practice at home. Please use the Zearn website for extra practice since the lessons there are aligned with what we are doing in class. We are currently on Module 2 lesson 10. Also, I only send homework home once or twice a week. I will try to send more this week since the test is coming up. I will let you know as soon as I know when the assessment is. When you do the homework with your child, please see the homework helper, which is the attached sheet, of how to do the work the same way we do it in class. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Winter Testing
It is that time of year where we will be doing the second round of testing. Little by little, I will be working with students to complete their DRA, NWEA reading, and NWEA math assessments. Please be patient in this process. Look for the results in their Data folder along with new MLP goals for the springtime. Please please emphasize how improtant these tests are and for students to take their time. I will give you a heads up before I administer the NWEA tests so students can get a restful night and healthy breakfast. DRA is ongoing and is hard to predict when I will do each student. Goodluck to them!
