Ocean Models

We are O-FISH-ALLY counting down the last days of school with an ocean themed project. The children will be choosing an ocean animal to research and write an informational book. In addition to the book, we are asking each student to create a model of their sea creature.  This model can be made from paper or other recycled materials, similar to the recycled sculpture project.  Please send the completed model to school by Friday, June 2, 2017.

All families are invited to join us for a presentation of our sea creature models and informational books on Friday, June 9th at 2:30pm. This entire event will last one hour. Please sign in at the office and then come to our classroom.

Agenda for the Week

Reading/Writing:  We continue to watch videos and read lots of books about ocean animals. The children love learning new facts about ocean animals. We are reading articles and answering questions about key details in the text. This week the children were assigned a specific ocean animal to learn about. I will help them in class to research this animal and write a report about it. I sent a note home today with the animal each child is researching and I am asking that you help them create that animal at home! Please do not send the project to school until June 2nd. We do not have any room in the class to store projects until the due date! In the past, some families have found cute crafts online (pinterest, youtube, etc), and other families have used wood, plaster, recycled materials and made 3D models of the ocean animal. It all depends on how much time you and your child would like to put into the project. The children will present their craft/model and report on their ocean animal to the class and we will be inviting all of you to come in and see the crafts/models and reports!

Please refer to the note that came home for more details!

Math: We took our -5 math quiz today. Today, I sent home the -6 flashcards for practice. We will take the -6 quiz on Friday, May 12th.

Science: We continue to learn about how we can better take care of the earth as the children are excited about this topic and keep asking more questions about how we can reuse items, recycle, and reduce!

We also focused on our ocean unit and made some crafts to go along with the animals we learned about. This week the children made starfish, sea shells, clown fish, sharks, and jellyfish! We were busy this week!

Housekeeping Items:

The class as a whole has been super talkative. It is making instruction more and more difficult on a daily basis. Please remind the children that the rules at school and in our classroom have not changed. With the warmer weather, we are all getting restless for summer!

Children need a snack each day! Please do not send candy as a snack. The children need a healthy snack each day such as fruit, crackers, cheese, yogurt, granola bars, etc.  As a reminder, no juice is allowed in class for snack.

Next week, we will use these blueprints to help us complete our own books about camping. The children will be the author and the illustrator of their books! They will create the cover, title, write a introduction, tell the events as they happened (in order), and conclude the story. I am so excited to see how the children’s stories will turn out!

PBIS 3-29-17

PBIS Celebrations

Dear Families,

On March 29 we will be having a PBIS celebration to recognize your child’s positive behavior. This month’s celebration theme will be GAMES! Your child may bring board games to school.

Please label everything with your name. This celebration is an opportunity for students to have fun and play games with each other. However, if you are concerned about an item being shared with other students we recommend that it stays at home.

Thank you,

Haigh PBIS Committee

Agenda for the Week

Reading/Writing:  We are still working on narrative writing. The children know that narrative writing is to tell a story and to entertain the reader. The children are practicing using transition words (first, next, then, last) to sequence events that happen.  We began using all of the information that we have brainstormed to complete our writing blueprint (graphic organizer).

Spelling words for next week will be in the homework packet coming home on Monday.

Math: We took our +9 math quiz on Monday due to school being closed last week. We took it just to see how we could do and most of the children did a wonderful job!Friday, we completed our +10 math quiz. Yesterday, I sent home the -0 flashcards for practice. We will take the -0 quiz on Friday, March 24th.

This week continued learning about comparing numbers using the greater than, less than, and equal to symbols. We also focused more on subtraction and different ways to decompose numbers. We practiced drawing the biggest number with circles and then crossing off the number of circles being “taken away.” We also reviewed using a number line to subtract. We started practicing putting the biggest number in our head and the small number on our hands, then counting down to find the answer. Example: 7 – 4 =? “I have 7 in my head and 4 on my hands (hold up 4 fingers). Touch your head and say 7, then put down one finger at a time while counting down (backwards), 6, 5, 4, 3. Three is the answer.

Please continue to practice counting by 1’s, 5’s, and 10’s to 100 with your child at home. Also practice counting to 30 by 2’s (2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20…..).  Other activities you can practice at home are using tally marks to count objects, identifying 2D/3D shapes around the house of community, and really making sure your child has good one-to-one correspondence when counting (this means that they touch each object as they are counting and count all objects correctly).

Science: We are still learning about the basic needs of living things. This week we began comparing living and nonliving things. The children completed a book about living and nonliving things where the children had to complete the words of each thing that was living or nonliving by cutting out the letters and listening to the sounds they heard in the word.

Social Studies: We began discussing maps. We talked about the shape of Michigan and located where we live on our hands! The children observed that our state looks like a mitten. We reviewed the name of our country and what the flag looks like. We will continue talking about maps and globes and complete activities to reinforce this topic.

Housekeeping Items:

Children need a snack each day! Please do not send candy as a snack. The children need a healthy snack each day such as fruit, crackers, cheese, yogurt, granola bars, etc.  As a reminder, no juice is allowed in class for snack.
