Halloween Parade 2019

Dear Haigh Community,

Each year the Halloween Parade is one of my favorite events at our building. It is soo much fun to see our students and staff dressed up in their costumes! We also enjoy the large crowd that comes to this event to support our students and the smiles that we see on everyone’s face.

Unfortunately, this year we will have to move the parade inside due to the expected cold temperatures and large amounts of rain. I tried to wait as long as possible to see if the weather was going to change for tomorrow, but it is not looking good. The parade tomorrow will also need to be for students and staff only. Due to our large population at the building, we will not be able to fit families, students, and staff into the hallways at Haigh. Safety is always on my mind and I want to make sure that we are keeping all students and families safe. I also chose to move the parade inside to keep everyone’s costumes in good shape for the evening “trick or treating” and to help keep our students from getting sick. Over the last few weeks we have had “Bingo for Books-Halloween Edition”, the “Halloween Dance”, Donuts and Cider, and class parties all to celebrate the holiday. Although we will not have the outdoor parade tomorrow, I believe our students and staff have had a great time celebrating this holiday. Throughout the year we will continue to have events at our building where our families will be able to come in and join us at the building. Another favorite, “Family Game Night” is coming up at the beginning of December in our Gym and cafeteria. This event is put on by “Learning Gizmo’s” and has been a huge hit in the past! Overall, we hope that everyone has a great evening tomorrow “trick or treating” and that the rain will come to an end soon. Thank you so much for your time,

Sincerely,

Mr. Short

Halloween

Halloween is just around the corner! We will be celebrating on Thursday, October 31st.

Here are a few things you should know:

Costumes: This year we are asking that your child come to school already dressed in their costumes. It takes too long for one teacher to dress every single child in the class. Costumes should be school appropriate. This means that your child should be able to get themselves in and out of their costumes by themselves in order to use the bathroom! We do not want any of the children to have an accident because they cannot undo their costume! Please keep this in mind when selecting a costume to wear to school.  Mr. Short has asked that all accessories to costumes be left at home. These items include, but are not limited to, masks, wands, swords, guns, etc.

A message from our occupational therapist

Occupational Therapy

Parent Activity Suggestions; 20+minutes recommended daily. These activities are especially important for children who have fine motor concerns, learning difficulties, attention deficits and language delays. Children who have not spent enough time practicing “developmental movements” (tummy time, playing on belly, rolling, belly crawling and crawling) are likely to struggle with formal learning later on at school. These activities are highly encouraged to improve the foundational skills needed for academic learning.

  1. Weight bearing on the arms; lay and play on tummy
  2. Rolling; body completely straight with arms above head and going both directions
  3. Army crawling on slick surface with bare feet
  4. Crawling on hands and knees (over and under furniture, through an obstacle course, tunnel, doing relay races)
  5. Animal walks; crab, bear, turtle, snake slithers, cat stretch, etc
  6. Superman; laying on belly and extending arms and legs in the air
  7. Hanging and climbing on monkey bars
  8. Tactile play; food, finger painting, play-doh, clay, rice, sand, shaving cream while practicing letters, shapes or drawing
  9. Swinging and hanging upside down
  10. Childrens yoga; down dog, cat stretch, cobra pose, etc
  11. Lacing, puzzles, mazes, tracing, beads, pop beads, use tweezers/tongs, opening/closing containers, squeeze a stress ball, cutting cardboard, squeezing glue, etc
  12. READ to your child EVERY night
