Dear families,

Your child will be starting to learn the ropes of spelling tests beginning next week.

On the first day of the week, your child will be introduced to 3 words that follow a pattern (like -at, -and, -op). These are words we will be working on spelling and learning in class.

There will also be 3 sight words on every list as well as 2 challenge words! Challenge words are for any student who would like to try them!

Now, the real challenge for the list is the “cold” words they will receive. What this means is that we study the pattern all week long so the children should be able to apply the pattern to other words using the sounds they know. For example, if we are working on the -ot pattern and the list has not, cot and pot on it as our “hot” words that came home on Monday, the test will have those 3 but also perhaps the words rot and hot. I am not allowed to reveal the cold words for you to study at home.

The day of the test (every Friday) is when I will assess the children on their mastery of the words for the week. Both hot words and cold words are graded as a part of the assessment as well as the sight words (I will not be grading the challenge words officially).
