Peek at Our Week

Good evening Haigh families! I hope everyone has had a fantastic weekend! We have had the best weather, some good news, and a lot of great hockey games played for my boys. I apologize for sending this out so late today. Between 2 hockey games, the grocery store, and hanging Christmas lights, I am exhausted!

We will begin our week out with a reading quiz on the skills we have learned in unit 2. These skills are all about character development including characters traits, their motives, and about the plot of the story. This week we will continue to build on these skills as we wrap up unit 2.

We will be having a resource pick up day Thursday and Friday afternoon (1:30-3:30)this week to pick up reading books for unit 3 and 4 and to pick up our math Learn book for the next unit. It is very important that you arrange a way to pick up these materials on these days. If you are unable to pick up items during these times please send me a message, as we will need these materials the following week. Learning labs on these days are canceled.

Last week in math we explored Grams/Kilograms and Liters/Milliliters and worked on solving word problems involving all four operations. These problems can be really tough for 3rd graders. Please check in with your child and review problems like those in lesson 11. We will be having our Mid-Module assessment on Tuesday.

Reminders for the week:

  • Monday—Fables essay due, Reading quiz
  • Tuesday—Parent teacher conferences for those that signed up
  • Thursday/Friday—Resource pick up day at the 3rd grade doors from 1:30-3:30. It is very important that you arrange for pick up of materials. You can even pick up for a neighbor in the class if you must.
  • Thursday/ Friday afternoon learning labs will be canceled due to resource pick up times.
  • Reminder that children should be completing a Zearn lesson daily. They should also be reading for 30+ minutes each day , making sure to read reading group book daily
  • Weekly assignment sheet

Looking forward to a great week ahead!

Peek at Our Week

Good afternoon Haigh families and happy November. I hope everyone had a great Halloween! My boys sure did and they got pounds of candy to prove it.

Last week we read about the elements of a myth and read a myth about King Midus. Students learned about character traits, motivations, and how the illustrations help us understand a story. We are still working on retelling a story across 5 fingers and will be reading another myth to practice with this week. We also finished almost all of our fable opinion writing blueprint. This week we will work on writing our opinion essay using this blueprint as our guide.

Last week in math we worked on measuring weights with grams and kilograms. We also looked at how to read a spring scale. This week we will look at measuring liquid volume using liters and milliliters. We will also solve mixed word problems involving all four operations using grams, kilograms, liters, and milliliters.

Reminders for the week:

  • NO SCHOOL TUESDAY: Election day
  • Parent teacher conferences; please sign up here
  • No learning labs on Thursday afternoon 11/5 this week
  • Please have your child complete Zearn lessons DAILY. Some are STILL behind
  • Please have your child read their reading group book each night and complete any group homework and read a book of their choice. Reading should be happening at least 30 minutes, if not more each night.
  • This weeks assignment sheet link

Looking forward to a great week ahead!

Peek at Our Week

Good afternoon Haigh families. I can’t believe Halloween is next weekend! The month of October is going fast. I hope everyone had a great weekend and enjoyed watching the football games! Go BLUE!

Last week the district canceled in person learning labs. While this was a bit disappointing, I am so thankful that we are still able to meet virtually. Reading group time is a chance for me to work with your child on reading skills and help them fill gaps they may have in their learning. Please be sure your child arrives on time to their “Virtual” lab and has their assignment completed. We are having a bit of a problem with that part. Your child should be reading their online reading book EACH night to work on fluency and comprehension. Almost every meeting I try to give them a small assignment to hold them accountable for their learning. You can help support this by setting the routine of reading their book each day and asking about any assignment they may have. Please note your child can read and listen to the book with the audio option.

Learning lab Schedule Did you know you can find this schedule on Schoology? Click on resources and look for the link that says reading group schedule.

Your child should be feeling a lot more comfortable with navigating Schoology. Whenever we have an assignment for the day it is located under the days button. Please be sure to check to make sure your child is submitting assignments. Did you know you can see what work they may have missing and work comments by clicking on grades on the left hand side? This can also be a routine to encourage your child to get in the habit of checking. Having your child take responsibility for their learning will help them develop confidence and keep them on track.

This week is Halloween and while we are not able to have a traditional class party I would love to celebrate! Please have your child dress up (this is optional) in their costumes for Friday’s Zoom sessions. We will take a break from our normal routine and engage in some Halloween fun!

Reminders for the week:

  • School board meeting is tomorrow at 5:30.
  • Topic A Quiz is Wednesday. PLEASE encourage your child to catch up on Zearn. We are in Module 2 lesson 4 and some students are still in module 1. Today looks like a great day to catch up!!
  • Review telling time to the minute on an analog clock with your child. Many are struggling with this. On schoology I did put a link to an interactive clock they can practice with. There is also a link to a interactive game.
  • Half day Friday
  • Wear Halloween costumes on Friday!
  • This weeks assignment sheet (Subject to change). Did you know you can also find this on Schoology? Click on resources and you will see a folder that says weekly lesson assignments.

Have a great Sunday!!

Peek at Our Week

Good morning Haigh families. I hope you are all enjoying the weekend and staying safe.

Last week we were able to almost finish up our NWEA and Reading assessments. This week I have a few more students to test. Next week (Week of October 12th) we will begin to provide small group learning lab meetings. This is where students will work with small groups via in person and remotely to work on reading skills with your child. Please see the communication from Mr. Short regarding information on learning labs sent out by district (click here).  We are still receiving information from district regarding learning lab information and more information will likely be communicated with you this week.

In preparation for learning labs I have begun to put my groups together and you can see what group your child is in (tentatively) by looking under resources in Schoology and clicking on reading group schedule. Please note that some groups will meet with me remotely and some will meet in person (pending further information) on the days listed. Please be advised that we are going to start this schedule the week of the October 12th.

Reminders for the Week:

  • Live lessons all week
  • Half day Friday (No specials class)

  • Pick up Unit 2 Reading Book Tuesday- Thursday 1:30-3:00 in the front of the school. Please say you are here to pick up materials for Mrs. Halimi 3rd grade and they will hand you the book and cross your name off the list.
  • Please make sure your child is coming to class on time, prepared, and ready to learn each morning.
  • Please check in with your child each day to make sure assignments are complete. Reminder that students should always click on the daily buttons on Schoology to check for assignments to turn in.  They should also check the daily assignments plans (under resources in Schoology) to check for practice work that is important to do (Like reading each night, or practicing a skill we did in class) but not to be submitted to me through Schoology.

Looking forward to a great week ahead!
