Peek at Our Week

Good Afternoon Haigh Families! Thank you all for your patience and support as we roll out the new learning lab and hybrid schedule. I recognize that you are getting a lot of information given to you during this transition time. You should have received an email from me last week stating your child’s hybrid placement of either “A” (Monday/Thursday) or “B” ( Tuesday/Friday). If you HAVE NOT received this email or are unsure of your child’s placement, please email me. This week we will continue with the afternoon learning labs. I really enjoyed seeing the kids last week. It was a refreshing feeling of familiarity and one that I have missed!

This week we will continue to work through our Advancements in Technology unit in reading. We will read about Thomas Edison and work on inferring , text features, and responding to close reading questions using the claim, evidence, reading (CER) approach. We will also continue to work on our opinion essay information collection chart to gather information to better help us write our essays.

In math we will have a quiz on the first 4 lessons about partitioning a whole into equal parts. We will move on to topic B to learn about unit fractions and their relation to the whole. One again, PLEASE have your child catch up and complete ONE lesson EACH day on ZEARN.

In social studies last week we learned about the Three Fires Tribes in Michigan. We read articles and stories, watched a video, looked at pictures, and completed a chart. Students had to demonstrate their learning by completing a Google Slides presentation about these 3 tribes. These slides are due on Tuesday. I moved the assignment to Monday’s folder for easy access.

Please talk with your child about staying focused and Zoom live lessons. Participation is a key to success. I have also noticed students leaving 5 to 10 minutes early from math class. This is not acceptable and students should be online the entire time.

Reminders for the Week:

  • Math quiz tomorrow
  • Extra help math time is ONLY on Wednesday from 1:20-1:50 due to the new learning lab schedule
  • In person labs each day except Wednesday is remote
  • Native American Slides due Tuesday
  • Please make sure your child is submitting math homework DAILY
  • Please ask, review, encourage your child to complete missing assignments. Quarter 3 is a short marking period and I want all students to succeed 🙂
  • Weekly assignment sheet

Looking forward to seeing my students this week 🙂

Peek at Our Week

Good Morning Haigh Families. I hope you are enjoying the snow this morning. I am glad we are home and cozy today 🙂

This week we will begin to transition back to in person learning labs. Please review the schedule that was sent out last week or click here. Please note that Wednesday there is no in person labs, but we will meet via Zoom if your child is on the schedule. Please note that information regarding your child following the “A” or “B” hybrid schedule will come out tomorrow afternoon.

This week in reading we will continue to look at non fiction articles relating to famous inventions and inventors. We will begin collecting information on our planning chart for our opinion essay. In social studies last week we began to take a look at the Three Fires Native American Tribes that lived here in Michigan. We watched an interesting video so students were able to understand how Native Americans used the land, animals, and natural resources to live on the land here in Michigan. Tomorrow (During asynchronous instruction) students will read 3 articles about these three tribes and complete a graphic organizer to understand more about them. We will be discussing them further this week in class. If possible, please support your child in the reading of these articles.

In math we are beginning our unit on fractions. Please be sure your child is caught up on Zearn so they can stay on pace with the daily lessons and not fall behind. Fractions prove to be a challenging concept for 3rd graders.

Reminders for the week:

  • Tuesday–Asynchronous learning day. Students will have NO LIVE INSTRUCTION but assignments to complete on Schoology
  • Wednesday–Regular classes via Zoom resumes. I will see your child at 9:00 am for reading. Please check the learning lab schedule to see if your child will meet with me in afternoon.
  • Thursday/Friday- First days of in-person learning labs. Please refer to the schedule to check when your child comes to Haigh.
  • Weekly Assignment sheet click here

Stay warm and safe in the SNOW 🙂

Peek at Our Week

Good afternoon Haigh families and happy super bowl Sunday!

This week we will begin our new reading unit which is titled: Advancements in Technology. Students will read a variety of nonfiction passages and learn how innovation is valuable for humans. Please locate this book for Tuesday’s lessons.

We will be wrapping up our module 4 math unit on area this week. We are having the test on Wednesday due to some students being absent in class due to WIDA testing. We will be reviewing for this test Monday and Tuesday. Please also note that if your child is struggling with these concepts they are more then welcome to attend the math help time on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 1:20-1:50.

Our next unit is fractions. This is a HUGE unit in 3rd grade. It would be very helpful for your child to be on target and up to date with their Zearn lessons. This unit can be challenging so the more support your child has the better. As I have said before, Zearn compliments the in class learning very well.

Reminders for the week:

  • WIDA testing on Monday at Haigh for the following students: Mohammed A., Mehdi, Fatima B., Ayaa, Mohammed F., Naba, Fatima W., Mahmoud . Your child should be at Haigh at 8:45.
  • Math test on Wednesday–study guides are linked in weekly assignment sheet
  • Weekly assignment sheet
  • Thursday will be an asynchronous learning day. this means your child will have NO LIVE INSTRUCTION. The district is scheduling teacher vaccinations on this day. Please have your child complete the lessons on the Weekly assignment sheet for Thursday
  • NO SCHOOL Friday the 12th or Monday the 15th for Mid-Winter Break. Enjoy this time and curl up with a good book or catch up on Zearn.

Enjoy your chilly Sunday!

Child Care at Haigh

Morning Haigh Community,

In preparation for the Hybrid Model, I wanted to share out the google document below that provides registration information for Kids Club and Childcare. As mentioned in my video yesterday, I am hoping to let families know within the next week if they are an “A-Family(in person on Monday and Thursday)” or a “B-Family(in person on Tuesday and Friday). I know that this will help with planning ahead for your families. Please see the linked document below that will provide some background information on these 2 programs.

Peek at Our Week

Good Afternoon Haigh Families 🙂

This week we will wrap up unit 4 on area in math. We will use our knowledge of area to apply our understanding to real world applications. We will look at finding the area of composite shapes and learn how to determine the side lengths by decomposing the shape. I plan to review on Friday and have a test next Monday.

In language arts we will continue our unit on point of view. We had a great start to our narrative journal entries on Friday. This week we will work on revising our writing to improve it for description, details, dialogue, and voice.

This week we will begin our social studies unit on Michigan History.

Reminders for the week:

  • Materials pick up is TUESDAY 2-2 from 1:00-4:00 by the 3rd grade doors. PLEASE arrange for pick up of materials as students need all new math and reading materials. If you have books borrowed from Mrs. Nardone, please return them as well. THANK YOU!
  • NO LEARNING LABS TUESDAY AFTERNOON!
  • Tuesday afternoon @ 1:30 the following students (Mohamed A., Noor, Mehdi, Fatima B., Ayaa, Mohammed F. , Naba, Fatima W., Mahmoud)should join Mrs. Joumaa for a practice session of the WIDA test. The ZOOM link is here in blue: WIDA Practice – Joumaa
  • Assignment sheet for the week

As we prepare to begin another week, please be sure to check in with your child and ask them if they have completed their daily assignments. Recently I have noticed several students who have struggled to turn in assignments daily. Printing off the assignment sheet above or making a daily checklist for your child will help them prioritize their assignments better. I could really use your support and guidance on this. Thank you 🙂
