Peek at Our Week

Good afternoon Haigh families 🙂 I enjoyed meeting many of you at open house on Thursday. Thank you for your support as we begin this school year.

Reminders for the week:

  • Field trip to the Universoul Circus on Thursday. Please return permission slip tomorrow. If you have a background check on file, I would love your help chaperoning.
  • Haigh school store on Thursday during lunch
  • Half day on Friday; dismissal at 11:45
  • Outdoor movie night Friday evening @ 7:00.
  • Please check your child’s owl folder for graded math quiz, sign and return. If they have less than 80% they may complete the test correction form and return for more credit.
  • Check your child’s planer for their log in information to the website ZEARN. This is a math website that goes along perfectly with our Eureka math program.
  • I will begin to introduce more websites to your children as time allows. Logins will be in their planners so they can access at home.

Academic Vocabulary for this week:

  1. Michigan- our state that consists of the upper and lower peninsula.
  2. Equation- a math statement that has an equal sign.
  3. Product- the answer to a multiplication problem.
  4. Factor- the two numbers that you multiply together in a multiplication problem.
  5. Geography- the study of places.

***Please make sure your child is STUDYING the spelling and the definition for each word. Test is always on Friday. In class we break the word apart by syllables to help us spell larger words. Some students do well with making flash cards to help prepare for their test on Friday.

This week we will continue to work through our NWEA testing. I am hopeful that we will all be complete by Friday. I plan to work on building our reading stamina and getting in some more lessons on character traits.

In writing this week we will begin to set up our writing binders and begin to brainstorm “seed” ideas for our personal narrative writing.

In math this week we will continue to work on multiplication and using strategies to help solve a problem. We will have a “Math quiz Monday” tomorrow to review the division concepts covered last week.

In science we will begin our first topic of force and motion and work through our first Mystery Science lesson.

In social studies we will begin to learn about the geography of Michigan.

I think our week will fly by with the anticipation of a field trip and half day on Friday. Looking forward to a successful week.

Peek at Our Week

Good afternoon Haigh families! Each week I will blog about our upcoming week and communicate with you about what we are working on in the classroom as well as any reminders or events we may have.

Reminders for the week:

  • Open house is Thursday from 6-7:30
  • Parent meeting is Thursday directly BEFORE open house from 5:30-6:00 ( A note with further information will be sent home tomorrow)
  • NWEA assessments will begin this week. We will start with reading, move to math, and finish with language. Science has been eliminated from testing this year.
  • Please get in the habit of checking your child’s owl folder every night and empty the contents. Also, please sign your child’s planner daily
  • Math quiz Monday– tomorrow we will have a short quiz on concepts taught last week.
  • The weather looks HOT later in the week. Please be sure to send a water bottle and dress your child in short sleeves. We will try not to melt as we brave the heat together 🙂
  • Please make sure you have an updated background check on file through the office. We will be going on a number of field trips this year and you will need one if you would like to help chaperone. Background checks are valid for 3 years

This week we will begin taking our fall NWEA assessments. Please encourage your child to do their best. We will be taking our scores and graphing them in our data folders and have many conversations about setting goals and working hard to show improvement through the year. You can help me out with this by encouraging good work habits at home.

We have just started working on our daily five expectations as well as working hard at building our reading stamina. Our goal is to work on their language arts choice for 20 minutes without interruptions. So far we have achieved around 15 minutes. I am certain that we will be at the 20 minute mark in no time! This week we will work on reading and analyzing characters and their traits within a story.

In writing this we week we will work on writing our goals for the first half of the year.

In math we will be working on the relationship between multiplication and division. Please make sure your child is completing the math homework in the BLUE success book each night. They should be writing the page numbers in their planner daily. We will be having a short QUIZ tomorrow on concepts from last week.

This week your child will be bringing home their spelling words/academic vocabulary words and homework. Please make sure your child is doing at least 3 of the activities on the choice board. Please note that your child also has 5 academic vocabulary words that they are responsible for knowing the definition and the spelling for. We do a variety of activities to reinforce these words in class but often times parents help their child create flashcards and give mock spelling tests in the home. Spelling and academic vocabulary tests are given on Friday. We will also be tracking our progress of these weekly tests in our data folders.

The academic words this week are (We are starting with 3 for this week):

  1. stamina- the ability to something for a long time.
  2. character- a person in the story.
  3. array- a set of objects arranged in rows and columns that help make counting and multiplication easier.

Please make sure your child is reading at home each night. The reading expectation is that your child is reading for at least 20 minutes each night. Some parents have asked about student reading levels, please know that I have not yet assessed students. Once our classroom is up and running smoothly I will begin DRA testing.Small group reading work will begin in October after the completion of all DRA assessments.

We are working hard at creating an engaging and efficient classroom. Please remind your child to bring their best listening ears to school each day so we can keep things moving throughout the day.

🙂

Looking forward to a GREAT week and I hope to see many of you at open house on Thursday.

Happy Labor Day

Good morning Haigh families! I hope you are all enjoying your long weekend! Each week I will post information to the class blog about reminders, important events, and our focus for the week.

Last week was full of introductions, routines and procedures, and time building our classroom community. Your children are all doing really well at learning all of these things. While these things take time, they are very important to ensure that our classroom runs smoothly.

In class this week we will begin to set up our daily five expectations as well as working hard at building our reading stamina. Our goal is to work on their language arts choice for 20 minutes without interruptions. So far we have achieved 5 minutes. I am certain that we will be at the 20 minute mark in no time! This week we will work on building our reading stamina and picking good fit books from our classroom library. We will also look at characters and their traits in a story.

In writing this we week we will work on setting up our writing notebooks and practicing work on writing procedures. We will be writing about the “Best part of me” and sharing our thoughts with our classmates. We will also begin to think about our goals for the first part of the school year and work on getting them set up in our data folders.

In math this week we will began our new math program titled Eureka math. This is our 2nd year into the program and is mandated by the district. Last year students showed great progress using this curriculum. Students have 3 workbooks; one they use in class daily for practice, one that goes home each night for homework, and one that stays in class but is loaded with math “sprints” that helps with fact fluency. Our first topic is multiplication and the meaning of factors. Please refer to the student planner to keep up with what pages are assigned each night for homework.

In social studies we will begin by discussing the geography of Michigan. We will be working with desk maps as we explore the unique qualities of Michigan.

In science this week we will be working on setting up our science notebooks. We will begin discussing the science and engineering process and engage in a STEAM activity where students will have to work within a group to design and build something.

This week your child will be bringing home their spelling words and homework. Please make sure your child is doing at least 3 of the activities on the choice board. Please note that your child  TYPICALLY (but not this week) has 5 academic vocabulary words that they are responsible for knowing the definition and the spelling for. We do a variety of activities to reinforce these words in class but often times parents help their child create flashcards and give mock spelling tests in the home. Spelling and academic vocabulary tests are given on Friday. We will also be tracking our progress of these weekly tests in our data folders. Spelling homework is due on Friday.

The reading expectation is that your child is reading for at least 20 minutes each night. The reading log for the month will be sent home tomorrow. Please help and remind your child to log in the books they read for the month. Please keep this reading log in a visible spot so your child gets into the routine of reading each night.

Looking forward to a GREAT week! I am sure it will FLY by! The weather looks HOT tomorrow. Please be sure to send in a water bottle and dress your child in cool clothes 🙂

I apologize for the long post and promise that they won’t be this long each week. If you have any questions or concerns, please e-mail me at: halimia@dearbornschools.org

Please join REMIND

Hello Parents!

We have been very busy and HOT learning new routines, sorting our supplies, and getting to know our classmates.

As another way to communicate with each of you I am sending a link to the REMIND app I use to directly communicate with you. This app is great because it works similar to a text message. I generally use it to remind parents about school events, field trips, behavior, or any other things that may arise.

Please join me and sign up using the instructions through the link 🙂

https://www.remind.com/join/438h47

I will also be sending home printed to directions if you are having trouble with this link.

Thank you and have a great evening. Be sure to check your child’s owl folder for PTA information and items that need to be returned.

Summer Math on ZEARN

Happy summer everyone! I hope you have been enjoying the long days with your sweet children. I know I have. I just wanted to let you know that I have updated your child’s ZEARN account to a fourth grade level. They can work each day for 20 minutes and get a jump on the Eureka math curriculum for the fourth grade. If you need a username or password, please send me an email and I will get back to you as soon as I can.

halimia@dearbornschools.org

Also, please take the time to visit your local library. They have a great summer reading program and a lot of FUN activity for kids planned each week. At my local library in Monday they had a mad scientist show! My kids really enjoyed it. Make sure reading is a priority in your home this summer 🙂 I know it can be hard (TRUST ME I KNOW) my own kids like to fight me on reading each day, but then I remind them the importance and that FUN awaits when they are finished. I also signed my kids up for ZEARN so they can keep their math minds up to par this summer.

Cheers to sunshine and LONG summer days!

Peek at Our LAST Week!

Good afternoon Haigh families! I hope everyone is enjoying this beautiful weekend. It is hard to believe that we only have 4 1/2 days of school left this school year. I am so thankful for the great group of kids I had this year. They all worked hard, made me smile, and taught me things along the way. Thank YOU parents for all of your support and encouragement this year!

We are all finished with our MADE IN MICHIGAN product research reports. Students did a great job learning about their Michigan made company. Their poster boards looked great and they shined during their presentation. Thank you for your help in making sure they followed the directions AND for the yummy snacks and samples you sent in 🙂

Tomorrow we will finish up our letters about the use of plastic bags to Mr. Abdullah Hammoud. Students will learn how to address the envelopes and fold the letter properly. I am going to have the students put their return address in case he writes back to them over the summer!

Also this week we will be cleaning out our book boxes, desks, and lockers and sending home things each day.

This week I plan to have some FUN with the kiddos! I promised them a kickball game and the whole 3rd grade will participate in some fun, team building games in the afternoon one day. The last week of school is exciting and bittersweet! We will also be writing a letter to next years class and perform in a readers theater with a small group.

A few things for the week:

  • Tomorrow is our field day so cross your fingers, eyes, and toes that the weather stays DRY! Please make sure students dress appropriately for the weather.
  • Tomorrow we also have a school wide picnic. Students are encouraged to bring a bagged lunch and small blanket or towel to “picnic” with friends.
  • PLEASE help your child look around the house for any books they may have borrowed from my library this year. Also, if you have any gently used chapter books that you would like to donate to my library, I will gladly take them off your hands. THANK YOU!
  • Friday’s dismissal is at 11:45

Enjoy the rest of your SUNDAY…I think I see the sun beginning to poke out 🙂

Field Day is June 10th

Dear Parents and Guardians,

To help us celebrate the end of another fantastic school year, we will be having Field Day on Monday, June 10, 2019.  For this Field Day event students will work through stations with their class to develop skills they have learned in physical education and have tons of fun!  The schedule for the event is as follows:

9:00 AM – 11:00 AM Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd Grades

11:30 AM – 12:30 PM All School Picnic

1:00 PM – 3:00 PM 3rd, 4th and 5th Grades

On June 10, students need to wear clothes that will allow them to be physically active outside, including tennis shoes.  They need to bring a water bottle. There will be a station to refill bottles if needed. Students are highly encouraged to bring a bagged lunch to enjoy at the all school picnic.  They are welcome to bring a towel or blanket to sit on as well. Students will be able to purchase school lunch if necessary.

We are looking for one parent from each classroom to donate a treat for the entire class to enjoy after their session.  Please, contact the classroom teacher if you would like to donate.

Lastly, we need 15 parent volunteers for both sessions to help run stations.  If you are interested in volunteering, fill out the lower portion and return it to Mr. Peecher.  Please, contact Mr. Peecher with any questions. peechers@dearbornschools.org

Thanks!  The PBIS & Field Day Committee

*We will only be able to accommodate students & parent volunteers for this event.
