Halloween Parade Cancelled

Evening Haigh Community,

Each year the Halloween Parade is one of my favorite events at our building. It is soo much fun to see our students and staff dressed up in their costumes! We also enjoy the large crowd that comes to this event to support our students and the smiles that we see on everyone’s face.

Unfortunately, this year we will have to move the parade inside due to the expected cold temperatures and large amounts of rain. I tried to wait as long as possible to see if the weather was going to change for tomorrow, but it is not looking good. The parade tomorrow will also need to be for students and staff only. Due to our large population at the building, we will not be able to fit families, students, and staff into the hallways at Haigh. Safety is always on my mind and I want to make sure that we are keeping all students and families safe. I also chose to move the parade inside to keep everyone’s costumes in good shape for the evening “trick or treating” and to help keep our students from getting sick. Over the last few weeks we have had “Bingo for Books-Halloween Edition”, the “Halloween Dance”, Donuts and Cider, and class parties all to celebrate the holiday. Although we will not have the outdoor parade tomorrow, I believe our students and staff have had a great time celebrating this holiday. Throughout the year we will continue to have events at our building where our families will be able to come in and join us at the building. Another favorite, “Family Game Night” is coming up at the beginning of December in our Gym and cafeteria. This event is put on by “Learning Gizmo’s” and has been a huge hit in the past! Overall, we hope that everyone has a great evening tomorrow “trick or treating” and that the rain will come to an end soon. Thank you so much for your time,

Sincerely,

Mr. Short

Peek at Our Week

Good afternoon Haigh families! I hope you are enjoying the weekend. Go Lions and Go BLUE!

This week is a busy week with Halloween, PBIS celebrations, and a half day on Friday. Because of this we will NOT have any academic words for the week. We will still have a spelling test.

Reminders for the week:

  • PBIS is Tuesday
  • Halloween party on Thursday 1:30-2:30; you are all welcome to stop in and say hello 🙂 PLEASE sign in at the office.
  • Halloween Parade 2:50-3:15
  • Friday; half day
  • Friday—3rd grade chip sale to support our Lansing field trip
  • Please be sure to sign and return unit 1 math tests in your child’s folder by tomorrow. If they have a grade less than 80% they may complete the attached correction sheet for more credit. PLEASE DO NOT erase original answers or additional points will not be added. Please only use the correction sheet.
  • If your child is now in Ms. Sellers class, please note they will be dismissed at the 4th grade doors off of Coburn.

A note about Halloween was sent out last week, however here are a few reminders:

  • Students may wear costumes to school (no weapons or masks, please)
  • Please DO NOT send in any snacks, candy bags, or goodie bags.
  • Party– 1:30-2:30 we will be rotating through our room, Joachim, and Lozon’s room for fun games. No help is required, but parents are welcome to sign in at the office and pop in 🙂
  • Parade will begin around 2:50. Please be sure to get a good spot around the perimeter of the building to take some good photos.

This week we will begin our new unit in math titled place value and problem solving with units of measure. Our first topic we will begin with is time measurement and problem solving.

In reading we will continue to familiarize ourselves with our new common core workbook. We have begun learning about CER (Claim, evidence, reasoning) questions to help us support our answers with evidence from the text and students have done really well. We will also look at recounting stories from the beginning, middle, and end to ensure comprehension.

In writing we will begin opinion writing. Students will start off with a fun prompt of what they think their teacher should be for Halloween. We will work on supporting our reasoning with details. We will progress next week with writing an opinion piece using evidence from a real text to support our reasoning.

I am looking forward to a great, FUN, SpOoKy week! Class size is now 23 and I am confident it will be a great week of learning! Enjoy the rest of your Sunny Sunday!

Peek at Our Week

Good afternoon Haigh families! I hope you are enjoying this last day of summer with family. Unfortunately I have been fighting the back to school germs and surviving the weekend on lots and lots of cold medicine!

I wanted to say a BIG THANK YOU to all the chaperones who helped out on Thursday. Your help and support go a long way in making sure our students are safe, smiling, and learning.

Reminders for the week:

  • Wednesday is LATE START; school begins at 9:35. It is also COUNT DAY, make sure your child is in school 🙂
  • Short field trip to the fire house is also on Wednesday at 12:30
  • Firefighters visit Haigh on Thursday to talk about fire safety to all 3rd graders
  • Thursday is our first PBIS party. Students who met the behavior requirement will be enjoying yard games outside.
  • Please consider purchasing a Haigh 3rd grade t shirt from the link in the previous post to support our trip to Lansing

We will be discussing the plot in a story and discuss how characters change from the beginning to the end of the story. In writing we will begin our personal narratives. Students will learn how to focus their personal narrative writing into “seed stories” and begin their “blueprint” or narrative plan about an event in their life. Students will be learning how to begin with a lead and include “show not tell” descriptions in their plot.

In Math we will be learning about the distributive property of multiplication. We will have our math quiz on Tuesday rather than on Monday this week due to our trip to the circus last week.

In science we began our first science mystery last week and the students were all really excited, I hope to finish our first mystery and make “hopper poppers” to demonstrate force and motion.

Academic Vocabulary:

  1. Setting- where a story takes place.
  2. Force- a push or a pull.
  3. Motion- a change in position.
  4. Trait- what a character is like on the inside; their personality.
