Peek at Our Week

Good afternoon Haigh families. I hope you are enjoying your weekend. Friday was fun with my boys as special visitors in the classroom. My boys just loved my students and can’t wait to come back again soon!

Reminders for the week:

Next Wednesday, December 11 we will be traveling to Lansing for our Field Trip to the Capitol Building and the Michigan Natural History Museum.  We will have a VERY tight schedule and the bus will NOT wait for tardies. It is important that you take note of the following:

  • Wednesday—Lansing field trip πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ STUDENTS SHOULD ARRIVE AT HAIGH AT 8:00 for breakfast (pre-ordered) OR report to the classroom.

Begin loading bus at 8:15. Leave Haigh at 8:35. If you are late, you will be staying at Haigh. ALL chaperones will be riding along with us on the bus.

  • Friday—Student lock in; 3:35-6:30, you should hear from the PTA via e-mail by Monday morning if you are child is chosen.

This week in reading we will be working on asking and answering questions in non-fiction text. We will also begin learning about main idea and details as another strategy in helping us understand the text. In writing we will be finishing up our thank-you letters to be delivered to Mr. Hammoud on Wednesday.

In math last week we focused on reviewing the standard algorithm for solving addition problems. We also worked hard at mental math brain power strategies to help students use their number sense to think about numbers. This week we will do the same thing, but focus on subtraction. I am aiming towards wrapping up unit 2 before Christmas break.

In social studies we have been focusing on the Three-Fires Native American tribes in Michigan. Students read about them last week and even watched an awesome short film to help them see the types of homes, hunting, and way of life of the Native American people of Michigan. This week they will design a paper plate diorama of the tribes they learned about. We will also learn about the French coming into Michigan and the impact they had on the Native Americans.

Academic Vocabulary:

  1. Culture- the way of life for a group of people.
  2. Glossary- located in the back of the book where the bold print words are defined in a text.
  3. Caption- describes the picture in a nonfiction text.
  4. Native Americans- the first people to be on the land that became the United States.

Looking ahead—our holiday party will be on Friday the 20th from 1:30-2:45. All parents are welcome to stop in and say hello. Room moms and I will be taking care of the planning this week. I still can’t believe how quickly the holidays are approaching :0

Looking forward to a great week in anticipation of our field trip to Lansing. PLEASE, PLEASE be sure to arrive on time.

Lansing Chaperone Update

The chaperones have been lined up. We are truly overwhelmed with how many parents wanted to serve as chaperones for this trip! Each of our classes had many, many parents who volunteered. Unfortunately, we are extremely limited in space at the Capitol and the Museum. If you were not selected to chaperone on this trip (which was done as fairly as we could), we want to encourage you–there are several more amazing trips coming up! If you didn’t get a chance this time, you will be guaranteed a spot on the next trip (if your background check is complete). Thank you for your willingness to help!

Peek at Our Week

Good afternoon Haigh families. I hope you are enjoying the weekend. Rumor has it we may be getting some snow tomorrow! I have located my shovel and windshield scraper just in case! Please remember to send in hats and gloves as we will be enjoying fresh air outside for recess.

Reminders for the week:

  • Book fair — Our class will visit tomorrow at 10:30
  • Tuesday/Thursday—parent teacher conferences
  • Tuesday book fair family night—open until 7pm
  • Wednesday—Otis Spunkmeyer delivery 2:30-4:30
  • Thursday—Wacky Science show assembly πŸ™‚
  • Friday– Haigh school store
  • Canned food drive–please consider sending in an item or two for those in need

This week we will be finishing up our unit on characters, retelling, and central message. We will also be diving into non-fiction text features this week. Students will learn how text features help support our reading and understanding of non-fiction texts. In writing we will continue to work on opinion pieces with an emphasis of incorporating evidence from a text to support our reasoning.

In math this week we will begin exploring measuring weight and liquid weight in metric units. Students will develop their understanding of grams, kilograms, milliliters, liters, reading a scale, and solving word problems. Please continue to work with your child on telling time on an analog clock and solving elapsed time problems. This concept can be challenging for some students. Taking the time to point out the time on an analog clock and measure the amount of time passed is great conversations for review.

I am looking forward to another busy week at Haigh.
