Stay Warm Haigh Families

Dear Haigh Families,

I have been thinking about all of you and wondering if you have been without power this whole time. I am astonished at how many people have been affected by the strong winds on Wednesday.I was very thankful to never lose power, however, my whole family did lose power. My mother in law is still without. Just wanted to send a note to tell you I am praying each and everyone of you receive power soon. Stay safe and I hope to see everyone safe and warm on Monday morning.

Peek at Our Week

Good afternoon Haigh families:)

Reminders:

*Our class will be visiting the book fair tomorrow at 11 am.

*Math quiz on geometry vocabulary tomorrow (study guide was sent to practice over the weekend).

*March is reading month, please make sure your child is reading each night for 25-30 minutes and completing their reading log.

*Please send in field trip permission slips.

This week in reading we will be looking at different nonfiction texts and apply our close reading strategies we learned last week to help us answer questions. We will be using the CER (claim, evidence, reasoning) strategy to help create strong answers with support from the text. We will also look at questions with paired texts where students must answer one set of questions from two different texts they have read.

In writing we will begin another informational piece. We will focus on collecting facts and information from sources, sorting the facts into main idea categories, and writing a paper based on facts. Students did a great job with this process when writing the “body” of their snowflake paper. This time students will scaffold into doing more on their own as they learn to be independent writers.

In math we will have our quiz on geometry terms tomorrow. We will begin to look at the different characteristics of polygons. We will look at how we can sort polygons into categories by their different characteristics.

In social studies we will continue to learn about different public issues and look at different scenarios in “fictional” cities. Students will learn how to work together to solve public issues by signing petitions, writing letters, and making others aware of a problem.

In science we will continue to work on force and motion. This week we will look more deeply at friction as we test Hot Wheel cars on different surfaces.

Academic Vocabulary:

  1. Ray-A part of a line that starts at a point and goes on in ONE direction forever. (2 rays make an angle)
  2. Line-A straight path that goes on and on in BOTH directions.
  3. Acute Angle- An angle that measures LESS than 90 degrees.
  4. Adjective- A word that describes a noun.
  5. Justice- To be treated fairly.

Peek at Our Week

Good afternoon Haigh families!I hope all of you enjoyed the fantastic weather last week, I know I sure did 🙂 So lucky to have the week off and have the sun shining each day. I think the sunshine helped me recharge and prepare for an exciting new month…MARCH is reading month! We have a lot of fun activities planned for March, so be sure to check your child’s backpack for the calendar of events as well as a month long reading log. Students will use the school wide reading log in place of our usual reading log.

This week:

Tuesday 28th: PBIS Beach Fun party

Wednesday 1st: March is reading month kickoff assembly

Friday 3rd- Lions assembly

This week we will focus on finishing our informational paper about SNOW. We have been working hard at learning what a source is, collecting interesting facts about our topic, and organizing the facts we found into categories. In reading we will focus on reviewing concepts such as main idea, inferring, plot, and point of view as we read different passages and use the text to help us prove an confirm our answers.

We will begin our new unit in math with the focus being on geometry. This unit is FULL of new vocabulary. We will do a number of fun activities to help us understand and remember the terms. We will have quizzes throughout the unit to help us as well. Please make sure your child is visiting frontrowed.com and working under the geometry strand. This will allow for extra practice for this unit. We will also continue our multiplication challenge drills. While they may not be as frequent, they will still be happening. Thank you for your support and encouragement to help your child master these facts.

We will continue to learn about force and motion this week as we create marshmallow shooters to test the effect of different forces applied on an object. In social studies we will begin our  unit on public issues.

Academic Vocabulary:

  1. Gravity- A force that allows things to fall or stay on the ground.
  2. Source- Something that we use to supply us with information on a topic. Ex. – book, website, photograph, museum, person
  3. Friction-A force that slows things down.
  4. Line segment- A part of line that has two end points and connects two points.

Peek at Our Week

Good afternoon Haigh families 🙂

Just a reminder that we will be having our spelling and vocabulary test on Wednesday(words from last week).

This week we will be learning about point of view. Students will learn how to determine the point of view and practice using a variety of texts. In writing students will continue to collect facts about snow and sort them. From there they will learn how to construct a paragraph including the facts they have found.

In math we will review place value. Students will review all concepts from this unit and take their test on Thursday. I will send home their pretests to study from on Wednesday. Please continue to have your child practice their math facts. They are on a roll and making great progress in our math challenge. A big CONGRATULATIONS to Jena and Jordan for completing the challenge:)

We will also be having our social studies test on Thursday. Look for a study guide to come home on Tuesday 🙂

In science we will investigate balanced and unbalanced forces, as well as investigate gravity.

You should of received a pink letter regrading Valentines day. If not, here is the information:

Next week is Valentine’s Day!  We have 24 students in our class and their first names are included on the back of this sheet.  We will NOT be having a traditional class party like we did for Halloween or Christmas. We WILL have a short celebration at the end of the day and engage in Valentine friendship activities during regular classroom instruction.

Here are the fast facts:

  • The celebration will be from 2:30-3:30.
  • Each child is encouraged (but not required) to bring valentines.  If you bring valentines, you must bring one for each student in the class—no one is left out!
  • Everyone will need to bring a plain brown paper grocery bag (like what you get from Kroger).  If you want to bring in an extra bag, just in case someone forgets, that would be great!
  • We will be having pizza around 11:15 provided by Mr. Cheese Pizza. Students will go to regular lunch time at 12:45, so they may just need to pack a snack instead of a whole lunch.

Peek at Our Week

Good Afternoon Haigh Families 🙂

This week we will continue to read realistic fiction and focus on making inferences within a text. We will share our informational books this week. Your child has worked extremly hard on these books and I can’t wait to see and hear their final products. We will also look at our NWEA scores and write new goals for the spring, as well as new behavioral and personal goals.

In math we will touch on decimals and review place value of large numbers. We will continue with our multiplication timed tests. Thank you for your support at home as you help and encourage them to really “know” their facts. A strong knowledge of multiplication facts really helps them with other math concepts as they continue this year and beyond.

In social studies we will continue to learn about the three branches of government and their functions. In science we will begin our unit on force and motion.

Academic Vocabulary:

  1. Conflict- The problem in the story.
  2. Force-A push or a pull.
  3. Infer-Figuring out something that wasn’t completely explained in the story.
  4. Equation- A math sentence that has two numbers followed by an equal sign. (4+2=6)
  5. Motion- The action of moving or changing position.

Enjoy the SUPERBOWL! May the BEST team win 🙂 I don’t have a favorite, I watch it more for the funny commercials and the half time show!

Peek at Our Week

WOW! I cannot believe that February is almost here! As the school year is moving along, I would like to take a minute to thank all of the wonderful families for their support this year. After two weeks of testing, I am ready for a normal week of school!  Your children are hard workers, well mannered, and overall amazing. THEY are a reflection of YOU and I am so LUCKY to be their teacher.

As you may know, we wrote our opinion pieces on our favorite restaurants in Dearborn. We sent those letters to each place of business and ……we have begun to receive some letters from the businesses. The students were so excited on Thursday when Seema received a reply back from Mr. Cheese Pizza! They were thrilled to read her paper and offered our class free pizzas!! Seema actually cried tears of joy! So sweet! In addition to Seema’s reply, Mr. Short visited our classroom on Friday to let us know that he heard from Olga’s Kitchen in response to Pauly’s letter he wrote. They really enjoyed his writing and offered us a treat that we will receive sometime this week. It’s great to see recognition for students hard work!

This week we will study the genre of realistic fiction and review theme and character traits. We will finish up our informational books and share them this week. We will get back to reading groups and daily 5 🙂

We will learn about how the government is organized as we discuss the three branches of government. We will begin our new unit of force and motion in science this week.

Just a reminder that we have our unit 4 math test tomorrow. We will begin with our new unit this week. Please make sure your child is studying their multiplication facts each night. We are still doing the math facts challenge! A shout out to Jordan who is working super hard and will be taking her “mixed up” facts tomorrow 🙂

Academic Vocabulary:

  1. Governor- The leader of a state.
  2. Capital- The city where a government is located.
  3. Plot- The events that make up a story.
  4. Dialogue- The conversation spoken between characters.
  5. Homophones-A word that sounds the same but has a different meaning and spelling. (Ex-no,know—won, one)

Also, thank you for all of the kind birthday wishes and gifts. I really had a great day on Friday and couldn’t have asked for a better day.

Have a great week 🙂

PBIS January

Families,

The end of the month is here, and that means it is time for our January PBIS celebration! On Monday, January 30th, if your child has maintained positive behavior for the entire month, they will participate in Haigh’s School-Wide Bingo game! The game will be played over the loudspeaker throughout the building so everyone will play together at the same time. This is a super fun event and a great way to recognize the positive behavior throughout our school.

Thanks for your continued support,

Haigh’s PBIS Committee
