Our Christmas party will be held on THURSDAY 12-21 in the afternoon (1:30-3:00). Students will be rotating through a variety of holiday themed stations. You are welcome to attend or pop in during the party to see your child, help out, or to simply enjoy. Please plan to check in at the office before coming down. Also, please refrain from sending in any “extra” items, as we already have planned events and food items. Thank you for your support 🙂

We will be having our vocab/spelling test on Tuesday (Words from last week). Also, we will not have ANY HOMEWORK or NEW SPELLING words this week! #MerryChristmasclass

This week in reading we will be doing holiday themed reading passages and books. In writing we will continue to work on opinion pieces.

In math we will continue to work on addition and subtraction strategies and word problems. I am aiming for our unit 3 test on Thursday morning so we can wrap up that unit before the break. Please expect a math study guide to be sent home by Wednesday.

This week looks to be really busy with extra activities, assemblies, and holiday cheer.

This week in reading we will be learning about the use of literal vs. non-literal language in a text. Students will be able to distinguish between the two and identify examples of figurative language within a text. In writing students will begin a new opinion based paper and read articles or sources and pull or cite facts directly from the article to support their opinion.

Last week students learned a variety of addition strategies to help support them in adding 3 digit numbers fluently. This week we will learn a variety of subtraction strategies and apply them to help us subtract.Students are still working on their multiplication minute tests every other day.

Last week in social studies students learned about the change that the Native Americans went through when the French came to the United States. They learned about the Great Lakes fur trade and the hard job of voyageurs. This week students will learn about another group of people who changed/impacted the Native American lives; the British.

In science we will begin our new unit of severe weather and look at the formation of clouds thorough our mystery science app and through books, discussions, and labs.

Academic Words:

1. timeline- a line with dates that represent important events in the order they occurred.
2. strategy- a tool or way of doing something that makes the task easier.
3. subtract- Finding the difference or taking an amount away.
4. voyageurs- men who transported furs by canoe during the fur trade.
5. detail- information that is added to tell more about a topic.

Attention: Families with Preschool age children who are 4 years of age by December 1, 2017.  There is an immediate possibility of free full-day preschool beginning in January 2018 in the Dearborn Public Schools (next month). The family must be eligible based on risk factors and not currently enrolled in a GSRP program.  If interested, families may pick up an application at the Cotter Early Childhood Center, 13020 Osborn or call Nadia Berry at 313-827-6150.

Good afternoon Haigh families 🙂 I hope you are enjoying this sunny and warm weather we are having.

Reminders for the week:

• Please send back permission slip/money for the field trip in February to see Charlotte’s Webb by FRIDAY 12/8.
• Bring in 1(or if you have more) empty cereal box to use in writing.
• I am also looking for donations of wrapping paper (To wrap the boxes in)
• Holiday party planning: Tuesday directly after school in my room.

Last week students worked hard at identifying the main idea and detail in a nonfiction text. They even researched a holiday themed item and wrote a five finger summary about it on an ornament to add to the class tree. Ask your child what they learned about. This week we will look at main idea within a comprehension passage and be aware of how to answer questions that center around the main idea and questions that may include more than one answer selection (similar to what students are exposed to on the M-Step). We will also read and listen to some some Native American legends and learn more about their connection to nature.

In writing we will continue to work on our opinion writing where students are writing a paper centered around the question: Is it more fun to give or receive a gift? Students came up with many clever and creative reasons for both and have begun to plan their writing on their opinion blueprint. To complete this writing I would like to ask for students to send in an empty cereal box that they can wrap at the conclusion of the paper and a new or used roll of holiday themed wrapping paper.  Tis’ the season to have some fun in writing 🙂

Last week in math we focused on rounding to the tens and hundreds place. We played games, worked together, and in math stations to help develop this important concept. This week we will be looking at the different addition strategies we can use to help students add 3 digits by 3 digits. We will focus on basic problems and look at adding in different story problems.

In social studies we will finish up our diorama of the Three Fires Indian tribes and share them with one another. We will begin to look at how the Native American tribes began to change as the French came to Michigan and interacted with them.

Academic Vocabulary:

1. Estimate- To find something close to the right answer.
2. Culture- the way of life for a specific group of people.
3. Round-making a number simpler to work with by keeping it’s value near a friendly number.
4. Main Idea- A sentence that describes what the passage/text is mostly about.
5. Legend-a narrative story passed on by generations that helps to explain something in nature.

The holidays are coming quick!!!

Good afternoon Haigh families. I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving with family. I have really enjoyed this break to take time to enjoy the holiday cheer with my family.

This week in reading we will be focusing on determining the main idea of a text by thinking about the topic and figuring out what the text is trying to tell us about a topic. In writing we will compose a informational writing for our district writing prompt. Later in the week we will begin to look at the difference between fact and opinion and learn about fact based opinion writing.

In math we are moving on to unit 3 which is addition and subtraction strategies. We will take our pre-test tomorrow and begin our new unit on Tuesday. We will still be taking our daily one minute multiplication fact quiz, so please keep studying!

In social studies we will be looking at the Native Americans in Michigan.

Academic Vocabulary:

1. Topic-the subject that is being discussed.
2. Fact- a statement that is true and can be proven.
3. Opinion- what someone thinks about a something.
4. Decade- a period of ten years.
5. Attract- when two things come together, like a magnets north and south pole.

• Book fair starts tomorrow and we will be visiting as a class in the morning. Students may bring money or browse. Book fair will be open all week and in the evening on both Wednesday and Thursday.
• Wednesday: Late start, school begins at 9:35
• Thursday: Savory foods fundraiser pickup at Haigh between 2:30-5:00
• Parent teacher conferences on Wednesday and Thursday after school; reminders have been sent out.

This week we will continue to talk about non-fiction text features and begin learning about how to find the main idea in a non-fiction text. In writing we will work on comparing the upper and lower peninsula and composing our 5 paragraph essay.

In math we will continue to focus on multiplication fluency and strategies. We will begin our week with a quiz on multiplication/division word problems and focus on in/out charts and word problems. Please encourage your child to practice for their math fact fluency tests that we take each afternoon. Ask your child what fact they are on.

In social studies we will begin our unit on the history of Michigan.

In science we will continue to work on magnets.

Academic Vocabulary:

1. Conclusion- The end of a story or a writing.
2. Heading- A title at the top of a text that tells what you will be reading about.
3. History-The study of past events.
4. Equation-A mathematical statement that has an equal sign. ex: 3 x 4 = 12
5. Magnet-A piece of material that is able to attract certain metals.

This week in reading we will be working on being aware of nonfiction text features and using them as a tool to help us comprehend a text. We will learn how to highlight textual evidence back in the text to help confirm our answer to comprehension questions. In writing this week we will work on composing our compare paper about our partners and begin another compare paper about Michigan.

In math this week we will focus on story problems involving multiplication AND division. Students will use a story problem organizer to help them determine if a story problem is asking them to multiply or divide. We will continue to work on our one minute multiplication quizzes each day. Please remind your child to practice each night on the fact they have achieved.

In social studies we will complete our regions posters and share them with the class. We will begin our new unit where students will learn about the history of Michigan.

In science we will investigate magnets through our mystery science lessons.

This week in reading we will continue to learn about non-fiction text features and how they help support our learning. In writing we will be working on compare and contrast papers.

This week in math we will begin our timed math facts daily quizzes. Students will take a one minute quiz each day on the fact they are working on. Everyone will start with ones and continue on as they progress. As they pass each fact, they will write their name on the wall of fame. Please encourage your child to study their multiplication facts everyday. Flash cards and fun computer games are high interest and help students gain fact fluency.

In social studies we will finish up our regions projects and review for our test.

In science we will do an investigation that will help students understand friction as a force. We will also review for our test.

We will not be testing on these words this week due to all of the other activities (Halloween, make up prep time, tests in social studies and science) we have going on. It is important that I have enough time to teach these words explicitly. Instead, we will have our spelling test Friday and these words will carry over into the next week.
