Summer Reading Solution

Hi parents, please see the note and instructions below that describe a great way to help your child maintain reading skills over the LONG summer. Please consider creating an account with read works.

Dear Parent/Guardian,

Summer is a great time to support your child’s reading progress! Students who don’t read much over the summer show a decline in reading performance from the end of one year to the start of the next. Reading over the summer can help your child maintain the reading gains they made during the year AND also help prepare them for next year!

Here are a few simple ways for you to help:

  1. Create your free Parent/Guardian account on ReadWorks.org

ReadWorks is a nonprofit that provides educators with thousands of free, high-quality nonfiction and fiction articles with questions and activities. ReadWorks is inviting you – all parents & guardians – to create your own free account to help your child stay on track this summer, and all year round!

  1. Go to www.readworks.org
  2. Click on “I’m an Educator”  (parents are educators too!)
  3. Click on the blue “Sign Up”
  4. Make sure to choose “Parent/Guardian” as your role
  1. Print Free Summer Reading Packets Now – www.readworks.org/summer-reading

To make summer reading easy, ReadWorks has curated interesting and knowledge filled summer reading packets on a range of levels that you can print and download for free!

Keep these tips in mind when using ReadWorks this summer:

TIP 1: Summer reading should be accessible and enjoyable, so be sure to choose articles that are at your child’s reading level. Don’t be afraid to start with articles from lower grade levels. The important thing is that students, read, read, read!

TIP 2: Aside from giving your child access to these high-quality texts, helping them keep track of their summer reading and discussing what they’ve been read with family members can also go a long way!

I hope you and your family have a great summer!

Field Day Information

Please see the note below regarding field day this year. A paper note will also be coming home in your child’s folder.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

To help us celebrate another fantastic school year, we will be having Field Day on Monday, May 14, 2018.  For this Field Day event students will work through stations with their class to develop skills they have learned in physical education and have tons of fun!  The schedule for the event is as follows:

9:00 AM – 11:00 AM: Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd Grades

1:00 PM – 3:00 PM: 3rd, 4th and 5th Grades

On May 14, students need to wear clothes that will allow them to be physically active outside, including tennis shoes.  They need to bring a water bottle. Students are highly encouraged to bring a water bottle that can be refilled at the refill station that we will provide.

We are looking for one parent from each classroom to donate a treat for the entire class to enjoy after their session.  We are also pre-selling Fla-vor-ice as a cool treat for students to enjoy during the activities. The cost for the Fla-vor-ice is $0.50, only one Fla-vor-ice per student please. Fla-vor-ice money is due by Monday, May 7.

Lastly, we need 15 parent volunteers for both sessions to help run stations.  If you are interested in volunteering, fill out the lower portion and return it to Mr. Peecher.  Please, contact Mr. Peecher with any questions.

Thanks!  The PBIS/Field Day Committee  peeches@dearbornschools.org

Math Homework Project and Reminders

Since we are taking M-Step this week, we thought we would make math homework a little bit more fun for the whole family. Your child will be exploring height measurements and recording the information on a chart and bar graph. Here is a sample of what it should look like!

  • Field trip permission slips are due on Friday.
  • We will not have any academic words this week
  • We are collecting money for our adopted animal from the Detroit Zoo
    • This is the LAST WEEK for our endangered animal adoption project. We are reusing milk jugs to collect money for adopting a wolf through the Detroit Zoo, and we need your help! Please send in any spare change.

M-Step Reminder

M-Step ELA begins this week (Tuesday-Thursday). We will be testing beginning at 9:00. Students must be on time to school, well-rested and with a snack for our mid-morning break. Please be sure to have your child eat a nutritious breakfast and to pack a healthy snack to feed their brain. These elements come together to create a decrease in stress for students in a testing situation.

Remind your child tonight that they are prepared for the tests–this is their chance to show off how smart they have become as a third grader!! Good luck to all of our third graders on the M-Step!

Peek at Our Week

Good evening Haigh families 🙂

I hope everyone got the chance to soak up the good weather this weekend. I am glad that SPRING finally decided to show up! Thanks again to all the parents who helped out on the field trip on Friday. We had a great time learning in an outside classroom.

This is our last week before M-Step testing. M-step testing will begin next Tuesday. We have been very BUSY preparing and reviewing concepts and strategies these last few weeks. I am confident that they will do great!

Reminders for the week:

  • Monday–Care to the Core Earth day celebration assembly, Social Studies TEST
  • Animal cracker sale (pre-order like popcorn sales) until the 25th with delivery on Thursday
  • Tuesday–1st grade market day, we will be visiting at 9 am to purchase items. If possible , please send in a few dollars to support the 1st graders hard work.
  • Friday–Gourmet popcorn fundraiser sales due

This week in math we will begin our unit on measurement. We will begin the week with a pre-test and focus on learning how to read a ruler. This should be relatively easy for them since we just finished up our fraction unit.

In reading this week we will integrate M-step prep with some FUN! We will review by playing jeopardy games, visiting a new site titled Edulastic where I can select questions that are in the same format as our M-Step tests. We will review and discuss how we got our answers and the strategies that we need to remember to use. In writing we will continue to work on responding to a prompt and locating evidence in the text to support our answers.

We will be having our social studies test on Michigan’s economy tomorrow and begin our new unit on Michigan’s government this week.

Academic words: (these words are M-step language specific. Often times the test uses words that students may not be familiar with since we may teach the concepts but use a different name like central idea and main idea are the same thing)

  1. Authors message— used in a fiction text to determine the theme of a text, book, or passage.
  2. Central Idea—usually refers to non-fiction text and means the main idea
  3. Elaborate— to extend your writing or talking by including further details on a topic.
  4. Affix— another word that means either a prefix or a suffix.
  5. Personification—giving human qualities to something that is not real. Ex. the wind screamed in the storm.

Looking forward to a great week 🙂

Good Afternoon

Good afternoon Haigh families 🙂

I am sorry for the late post, but like many of you, I was without power ALL day yesterday. I am hoping that power is restored for any of you have lost power since I know how aggravating it can be.

This week looks to be wet and soggy! Due to the wet weather I am sure that our nature center field trip will be a muddy one. Please be sure to dress your child appropriately in rain boots or old gym shoes. In addition, please pack an extra pair of shoes for when we return Friday afternoon. Also, students will be eating a picnic lunch so be sure to pack a nutritious lunch in a brown bag so students can dispose of their trash.

Looking ahead, we have a few more field trips for the year. Please remember that if you would like to chaperone for a field trip  you must have a background check on file. You can do this quickly at the front office but the process takes about 2 weeks to confirm. Once the process is complete it stays on file for three years. I have a few people that are planning to chaperone for Fridays field trip that do NOT have background checks. You are welcome to attend, but you cannot be in charge of a group of students or ride the bus with us.

We have been super busy these past few weeks preparing for the M-Step. We will begin our M-step testing on May 1st. Please make sure students are going on Mobymax and Frontrowed for extra practice with reading and math. Every little bit helps 🙂

This week we will have our math assessment on fractions on Wednesday. We completed the study guide on Friday so students should already have that in their owl folder. We will also be having our social studies test on Thursday or Friday. Look for a study guide to go out by Wednesday.

Due to our busy week, we will have 4 academic vocabulary words:

  1. Stanza- a group of lines in a poem; like a paragraph
  2. Synonym – a word or phrase that means the same thing. example: big, giant
  3. Antonym- a word or phrase that means the opposite. example: big, small
  4. Skim- to briefly scan the article and look for key words or topics.

Reminders for the week:

Tuesday: Assembly

Thursday: School store at lunch

Friday: Field trip to the U of M Nature Center

*****Bring in extra nickles and pennies to support our adopted wolf from the Detroit zoo*******
