Peek at Our Week

on September 22, 2019

Good afternoon Haigh families! I hope you are enjoying this last day of summer with family. Unfortunately I have been fighting the back to school germs and surviving the weekend on lots and lots of cold medicine!

I wanted to say a BIG THANK YOU to all the chaperones who helped out on Thursday. Your help and support go a long way in making sure our students are safe, smiling, and learning.

Reminders for the week:

  • Wednesday is LATE START; school begins at 9:35. It is also COUNT DAY, make sure your child is in school 🙂
  • Short field trip to the fire house is also on Wednesday at 12:30
  • Firefighters visit Haigh on Thursday to talk about fire safety to all 3rd graders
  • Thursday is our first PBIS party. Students who met the behavior requirement will be enjoying yard games outside.
  • Please consider purchasing a Haigh 3rd grade t shirt from the link in the previous post to support our trip to Lansing

This week we will work on finishing up our NWEA testing and I will work through testing each students DRA reading level. We will be discussing the plot in a story and discuss how characters change from the beginning to the end of the story. In writing we will begin our personal narratives. Students will learn how to focus their personal narrative writing into “seed stories” and begin their “blueprint” or narrative plan about an event in their life. Students will be learning how to begin with a lead and include “show not tell” descriptions in their plot.

In Math we will be learning about the distributive property of multiplication. We will have our math quiz on Tuesday rather than on Monday this week due to our trip to the circus last week.

In science we began our first science mystery last week and the students were all really excited, I hope to finish our first mystery and make “hopper poppers” to demonstrate force and motion.

Academic Vocabulary:

  1. Setting- where a story takes place.
  2. Force- a push or a pull.
  3. Motion- a change in position.
  4. Trait- what a character is like on the inside; their personality.
  5. Quotient- the answer to a division problem.

***Please make sure your child is STUDYING the spelling and the definition for each word. Test is always on Friday. In class we break the word apart by syllables to help us spell larger words. Some students do well with making flash cards to help prepare for their test on Friday.

Looking forward to a great week!
