Happy Tuesday :)

Good afternoon Haigh families! Temperatures are HOT, HOT, HOT in the classroom today and it looks to be the same tomorrow. Please send in a bottle of water for your child to stay hydrated.

We have just started working on our daily five expectations as well as working hard at building our reading stamina. Our goal is to work on their language arts choice for 20 minutes without interruptions. So far we have achieved around 8 in a half minutes. I am certain that we will be at the 20 minute mark in no time! This week we will work on building or reading stamina and picking good fit books from our classroom library. We will also look at characters and their traits in a story.

In writing this we week we will work on setting up our goal folders and writing about our hopes and dreams for the third grade.

In math we began our new math program titled Eureka math. This is a new program set mandated by the district. Students have 3 workbooks; one they use in class daily for practice, one that goes home each night for homework, and one that stays in class but is loaded with math “sprints” that helps with fact fluency. Please refer to the student planner to keep up with what pages are assigned each night for homework.

In social studies we will begin with discussing the geography of Michigan. We will be working with desk maps as we explore the unique qualities of Michigan.

This week your child will be bringing home their spelling words and homework. Please make sure your child is doing at least 3 of the activities on the choice board. Please note that your child  TYPICALLY (but not this week) has 5 academic vocabulary words that they are responsible for knowing the definition and the spelling for. We do a variety of activities to reinforce these words in class but often times parents help their child create flashcards and give mock spelling tests in the home. Spelling and academic vocabulary tests are given on Friday. We will also be tracking our progress of these weekly tests in our data folders.

The reading expectation is that your child is reading for at least 20 minutes each night. The reading log was sent home with your child today. Students are encouraged to read for the goal of 20 minutes each night and color each square the corresponding color according to the key. Please keep this reading log in a visible spot so your child gets into the routine of reading each night.

Our special schedule has been finalized:

Monday: Music and library checkout

Tuesday: gym, please be sure students have their gym shoes and art

Wednesday:  music

Thursday: Media

Friday: Technology

Reminder: 3rd grade parent meeting is scheduled for Thursday, September 6th directly after school in Mrs. Joachim’s room. We will be discussing routines and procedures, technology, and homework expectations. Please join us if you can 🙂

Looking forward to a GREAT week!
