Peek at Our Week

on March 1, 2020

Good afternoon Haigh families. Hopefully you are enjoying the weekend. We had a busy, winning hockey weekend over here. Both of my boys teams won against their rival teams on Saturday! We are enjoying a quiet day at home today on this first day of MARCH!

Reminders for the week:

  • March is reading month assembly Monday morning. Please be sure to check your child’s owl folder for their March is reading log packet that includes a calendar of events, reading log, and permission slip to this months read-a-thon 🙂
  • Library check-out Monday am
  • Spelling test from last week is tomorrow due to snow days
  • February reading logs are due tomorrow
  • Please send in an EXTRA pair of shoes with your child. The playground is saturated with water and making shoes extra muddy! We just got a brand new rug in our classroom and I would love to keep it clean 🙂

Academic Vocabulary:

  1. Unit fraction- a fraction where the top number is 1.
  2. Numerator- the top number in a fraction and tells the part that is shaded in a fraction.
  3. Denominator- the bottom number in a fraction and tells the total amount in the whole.
  4. Classification- organizing plants and animals into different categories based on their characteristics.

This week in reading we will continue to work on making inferences in a text. We will also work on CER based comprehension questions so we we can practice supporting our claims with evidence from a text. In writing we are just getting started on our opinion paper on whether we should cut down trees in the rain forest. This topic goes along great with our reading month theme of jungle.

Last week in math we started with the basics of fractions. We looked at models, made paper strips, and practiced drawing and splitting up shapes into equal parts. This week we will build on this knowledge and work on exploring unit fractions and their relation to the whole.

In social studies we will talk about the growth of the automobile industry in Michigan.

This week we will have some extra music classes built into our schedule for practice for our upcoming spring concert. A copy of songs was sent home before break. Please have your child practice at home. The concert will be on Tuesday, March 17th at Bryant.

Looking forward to a great week at Haigh!
