Peek at Our Week

on December 8, 2019

Good afternoon Haigh families. I hope you are enjoying your weekend. Friday was fun with my boys as special visitors in the classroom. My boys just loved my students and can’t wait to come back again soon!

Reminders for the week:

Next Wednesday, December 11 we will be traveling to Lansing for our Field Trip to the Capitol Building and the Michigan Natural History Museum.  We will have a VERY tight schedule and the bus will NOT wait for tardies. It is important that you take note of the following:

  • Wednesday—Lansing field trip 🙂 🙂 🙂 STUDENTS SHOULD ARRIVE AT HAIGH AT 8:00 for breakfast (pre-ordered) OR report to the classroom.

Begin loading bus at 8:15. Leave Haigh at 8:35. If you are late, you will be staying at Haigh. ALL chaperones will be riding along with us on the bus.

  • Friday—Student lock in; 3:35-6:30, you should hear from the PTA via e-mail by Monday morning if you are child is chosen.

This week in reading we will be working on asking and answering questions in non-fiction text. We will also begin learning about main idea and details as another strategy in helping us understand the text. In writing we will be finishing up our thank-you letters to be delivered to Mr. Hammoud on Wednesday.

In math last week we focused on reviewing the standard algorithm for solving addition problems. We also worked hard at mental math brain power strategies to help students use their number sense to think about numbers. This week we will do the same thing, but focus on subtraction. I am aiming towards wrapping up unit 2 before Christmas break.

In social studies we have been focusing on the Three-Fires Native American tribes in Michigan. Students read about them last week and even watched an awesome short film to help them see the types of homes, hunting, and way of life of the Native American people of Michigan. This week they will design a paper plate diorama of the tribes they learned about. We will also learn about the French coming into Michigan and the impact they had on the Native Americans.

Academic Vocabulary:

  1. Culture- the way of life for a group of people.
  2. Glossary- located in the back of the book where the bold print words are defined in a text.
  3. Caption- describes the picture in a nonfiction text.
  4. Native Americans- the first people to be on the land that became the United States.

Looking ahead—our holiday party will be on Friday the 20th from 1:30-2:45. All parents are welcome to stop in and say hello. Room moms and I will be taking care of the planning this week. I still can’t believe how quickly the holidays are approaching :0

Looking forward to a great week in anticipation of our field trip to Lansing. PLEASE, PLEASE be sure to arrive on time.
