Good afternoon Haigh families. I hope you are enjoying the weekend. Rumor has it we may be getting some snow tomorrow! I have located my shovel and windshield scraper just in case! Please remember to send in hats and gloves as we will be enjoying fresh air outside for recess.
Reminders for the week:

- Tuesday book fair family night—open until 7pm

- Friday– Haigh school store
- Canned food drive–please consider sending in an item or two for those in need
This week we will be finishing up our unit on characters, retelling, and central message. We will also be diving into non-fiction text features this week. Students will learn how text features help support our reading and understanding of non-fiction texts. In writing we will continue to work on opinion pieces with an emphasis of incorporating evidence from a text to support our reasoning.
In math this week we will begin exploring measuring weight and liquid weight in metric units. Students will develop their understanding of grams, kilograms, milliliters, liters, reading a scale, and solving word problems. Please continue to work with your child on telling time on an analog clock and solving elapsed time problems. This concept can be challenging for some students. Taking the time to point out the time on an analog clock and measure the amount of time passed is great conversations for review.
In social studies we will be wrapping up our unit on the geography of Michigan by completing a Michigan collage that compiles all of the things we have learned.
In science we will explore magnets.
Academic Vocabulary:
- Region- an area with one or more common features.
- Central Message- the lesson of a story.
- Magnet- a type of metal that can pull certain types of metal towards itself.
- Opinion- what somebody thinks about an issue/topic.
- Prioritize- to organize things so the most important things are done first.
I am looking forward to another busy week at Haigh.
