Last week in reading we explored and read fables. This week the students will be introduced to the genre of myths. We will read a number of Greek myths and discuss characters and plot. In writing we will work on our final copy of our personal narratives. We will also begin a fun haunted house writing where students will continue to practice “show not tell” descriptions as well as the use of red flag transition words to describe their experience in a haunted house. We did a short example of this with our pumpkin patch stories that we hung in the hallway on Friday.
In math this week we will continue to work on the distributive property and number bonds to solve larger multiplication facts. This property helps students with larger problems and will help them tremendously as they apply it to even larger facts in the upper grades. We will have a quick math quiz tomorrow on multiplication tape diagrams.
In social studies this week we will human and natural characteristics of Michigan. We will be reading a story about the construction of the Mackinaw bridge and explore the different points of view that people had surrounding it’s construction. We will also work on our land forms and bodies of water slides.
In science this week we will explore the design of 3 different style of bridges and learn how these bridges create a balance of force so large cars and trucks can move across them. We will design our own bridges and test them using pennies to see how much they can hold.
Looks to be a chilly fall week so please remember to send along a light jacket with your child.
Looking forward to a great week!
