Good afternoon Haigh families. I hope you are enjoying cozy times inside on this chilly rainy day. My youngest son had his first hockey game of the season this morning and scored 2 goals!! Now they are snuggled up on the couch rooting for the Lions! Go Lions!!

Reminders for the week:

  • Library is tomorrow; please make sure your child has their library book
  • Tuesday–mid-module unit 1 math assessment
  • Thursday– Ottis Spunkmeyer assembly
  • Friday–Picture day; information will be sent home on Monday
  • The weather is HOT on Monday and Tuesday. Please make sure students are dressed for a hot day and have water to sip on.
  • Tuesday is October 1st and our new habit is “Take Responsibility” Talk to your child at home about this habit and how it relates to homework, studying, being on time to sports practice etc.

Last week was a busy week but I am happy to say we have completed ALL NWEA assessments and are finishing up working on our DRA reading assessments.

This week in reading we will continue to take a look at characters in a story and pay attention to how the illustrations, characters actions, and thoughts help set the mood of the story. We will also continue to track character traits and pay attention to how characters change throughout the story. In writing we will plan out our personal narrative story on our blueprints and learn how to include “Show not tell” descriptions to tell the details of their story.

In math this week we will be learning a problem solving strategy using a tape diagram. The tape diagram is just a picture that allows students to notice what information is known in the problem and what they need to find out. We will also be doing our mid-module assessment on Tuesday. Please make sure your child studies and understands the study guide we did in class. This sheet mirrors our test.

In science this week we will be creating “hopper poppers” to model force on an object.

In social studies we will be practicing map skills and learning the difference between absolute and relative location. We will also begin to explore different land forms in our state.

Academic Vocabulary:

  1. Plot- the beginning, middle, and end of a story.
  2. Compass- a tool used to tell the direction; north, east, south, west.
  3. Lead- the first line in an essay that captures the readers attention.
  4. Absolute location- The exact location of a place. Example–an address
  5. Relative location- where a place is located relative to another place. Example—Livonia is north west of Dearborn. Haigh is across the street from Levagood park.

Looking forward to a successful week:)
