Happy Labor Day

on September 2, 2019

Good morning Haigh families! I hope you are all enjoying your long weekend! Each week I will post information to the class blog about reminders, important events, and our focus for the week.

Last week was full of introductions, routines and procedures, and time building our classroom community. Your children are all doing really well at learning all of these things. While these things take time, they are very important to ensure that our classroom runs smoothly.

In class this week we will begin to set up our daily five expectations as well as working hard at building our reading stamina. Our goal is to work on their language arts choice for 20 minutes without interruptions. So far we have achieved 5 minutes. I am certain that we will be at the 20 minute mark in no time! This week we will work on building our reading stamina and picking good fit books from our classroom library. We will also look at characters and their traits in a story.

In writing this we week we will work on setting up our writing notebooks and practicing work on writing procedures. We will be writing about the “Best part of me” and sharing our thoughts with our classmates. We will also begin to think about our goals for the first part of the school year and work on getting them set up in our data folders.

In math this week we will began our new math program titled Eureka math. This is our 2nd year into the program and is mandated by the district. Last year students showed great progress using this curriculum. Students have 3 workbooks; one they use in class daily for practice, one that goes home each night for homework, and one that stays in class but is loaded with math “sprints” that helps with fact fluency. Our first topic is multiplication and the meaning of factors. Please refer to the student planner to keep up with what pages are assigned each night for homework.

In social studies we will begin by discussing the geography of Michigan. We will be working with desk maps as we explore the unique qualities of Michigan.

In science this week we will be working on setting up our science notebooks. We will begin discussing the science and engineering process and engage in a STEAM activity where students will have to work within a group to design and build something.

This week your child will be bringing home their spelling words and homework. Please make sure your child is doing at least 3 of the activities on the choice board. Please note that your child  TYPICALLY (but not this week) has 5 academic vocabulary words that they are responsible for knowing the definition and the spelling for. We do a variety of activities to reinforce these words in class but often times parents help their child create flashcards and give mock spelling tests in the home. Spelling and academic vocabulary tests are given on Friday. We will also be tracking our progress of these weekly tests in our data folders. Spelling homework is due on Friday.

The reading expectation is that your child is reading for at least 20 minutes each night. The reading log for the month will be sent home tomorrow. Please help and remind your child to log in the books they read for the month. Please keep this reading log in a visible spot so your child gets into the routine of reading each night.

Looking forward to a GREAT week! I am sure it will FLY by! The weather looks HOT tomorrow. Please be sure to send in a water bottle and dress your child in cool clothes 🙂

I apologize for the long post and promise that they won’t be this long each week. If you have any questions or concerns, please e-mail me at: halimia@dearbornschools.org
