Good evening Haigh families 🙂
I hope everyone got the chance to soak up the good weather this weekend. I am glad that SPRING finally decided to show up! Thanks again to all the parents who helped out on the field trip on Friday. We had a great time learning in an outside classroom.
This is our last week before M-Step testing. M-step testing will begin next Tuesday. We have been very BUSY preparing and reviewing concepts and strategies these last few weeks. I am confident that they will do great!
Reminders for the week:
- Monday–Care to the Core Earth day celebration assembly, Social Studies TEST
- Animal cracker sale (pre-order like popcorn sales) until the 25th with delivery on Thursday
- Tuesday–1st grade market day, we will be visiting at 9 am to purchase items. If possible , please send in a few dollars to support the 1st graders hard work.
- Friday–Gourmet popcorn fundraiser sales due
This week in math we will begin our unit on measurement. We will begin the week with a pre-test and focus on learning how to read a ruler. This should be relatively easy for them since we just finished up our fraction unit.
In reading this week we will integrate M-step prep with some FUN! We will review by playing jeopardy games, visiting a new site titled Edulastic where I can select questions that are in the same format as our M-Step tests. We will review and discuss how we got our answers and the strategies that we need to remember to use. In writing we will continue to work on responding to a prompt and locating evidence in the text to support our answers.
We will be having our social studies test on Michigan’s economy tomorrow and begin our new unit on Michigan’s government this week.
Academic words: (these words are M-step language specific. Often times the test uses words that students may not be familiar with since we may teach the concepts but use a different name like central idea and main idea are the same thing)
- Authors message— used in a fiction text to determine the theme of a text, book, or passage.
- Central Idea—usually refers to non-fiction text and means the main idea
- Elaborate— to extend your writing or talking by including further details on a topic.
- Affix— another word that means either a prefix or a suffix.
- Personification—giving human qualities to something that is not real. Ex. the wind screamed in the storm.
Looking forward to a great week 🙂
