Peek at Our Week

on January 15, 2018

I hope everyone enjoyed their long weekend.

This week we will begin our NWEA testing. Please make sure your child eats a healthy breakfast and give them some words of encouragement. I am sure they will all improve and show growth from the beginning of the year. Please look for their scores in their planners.

This week in math we will be going over area. Dearborn is  adopting a new math program next year and third grade is piloting it for the next few months. We started it last week and students all got a work book that we have worked in for two lessons. In the new workbook there are built in homework practice pages. I will be trying this out this week in place of the usual homework packets to see how it goes. Students need to be responsible for taking the book home each night and returning it in the morning. This will also mean that students will have to work on one page each night and return it in the morning, which may make your child’s homework routine a bit different.

Last week in writing we began to talk about informational writing. We discussed the purpose of writing to inform and how important it is to pull facts and information from reliable sources. This week we will work on collecting these facts from articles to include in our paper. Our topic is “snow” which also fits into our weather unit in science(and is everywhere right now!).

In social studies we learned all about early pioneer life last week. This week we will learn how Michigan overcame some struggles and became a state. We will be looking to test by the end of the week or the beginning of next week depending on how much we get through with NWEA testing.

Just a reminder that we will NOT have NEW spelling words or academic words this week. We did not review all of the words last week, so I made a decision to add them for another week so students feel comfortable with each word. We will test both spelling and academic words on Friday.

Reminders for the week:

  • Late start on Wednesday
  • PTA meeting on Wednesday 6-7
  • Haigh school store on Thursday during lunch
  • Little Ceasers fundraiser forms due on Friday the 19th

I will also be finishing up reading DRA / progress monitoring assessment to students this week to monitor their reading level.

To say that this short week is a “busy” week is an understatement! We will be busy and working hard to show our progress toward our 2018 goals.
