Peek at Our Week

on March 5, 2017

Good afternoon Haigh families:)

Reminders:

*Our class will be visiting the book fair tomorrow at 11 am.

*Math quiz on geometry vocabulary tomorrow (study guide was sent to practice over the weekend).

*March is reading month, please make sure your child is reading each night for 25-30 minutes and completing their reading log.

*Please send in field trip permission slips.

This week in reading we will be looking at different nonfiction texts and apply our close reading strategies we learned last week to help us answer questions. We will be using the CER (claim, evidence, reasoning) strategy to help create strong answers with support from the text. We will also look at questions with paired texts where students must answer one set of questions from two different texts they have read.

In writing we will begin another informational piece. We will focus on collecting facts and information from sources, sorting the facts into main idea categories, and writing a paper based on facts. Students did a great job with this process when writing the “body” of their snowflake paper. This time students will scaffold into doing more on their own as they learn to be independent writers.

In math we will have our quiz on geometry terms tomorrow. We will begin to look at the different characteristics of polygons. We will look at how we can sort polygons into categories by their different characteristics.

In social studies we will continue to learn about different public issues and look at different scenarios in “fictional” cities. Students will learn how to work together to solve public issues by signing petitions, writing letters, and making others aware of a problem.

In science we will continue to work on force and motion. This week we will look more deeply at friction as we test Hot Wheel cars on different surfaces.
