5-14-20 (Th) Honors Chemistry Assignment: Electronegativity and Bond Type
Objective/Topic: Using values and trends in the periodic table, 1) calculate the electronegativity difference between two atoms and 2) determine the type of bond that results (ie. nonpolar covalent. polar covalent, or ionic).

5-6-20 (W) Honors Chemistry Assignment: Periodic Trends and Bond Type
Objective/Topic: Use the periodic table to predict atomic size, electronegativity,, and the type of bond that results between two atoms in a compound.
Instructions: Due Sunday May 10, 2020
Use the resources below to write a short essay (250-500 words) that addresses the following questions. Use one paragraph for each question.
1) What is electronegativity?
2) How is electronegativity related to the atomic size trend?
3) Describe the following bond types; nonpolar covalent, polar covalent, and ionic)
4) How do atomic size and electronegativity trends influence the bond type that results between atoms that join to form a compound?
4-29-20 (W) Honors Chemistry Assignment
Objective/Topic: Use the periodic table to predict the relative size of atoms.
Week 2 Article: Periodicity: Trends in the Periodic Table https://www.compoundchem.com/2014/02/12/periodicity-trends-in-the-periodic-table/
Instructions: Due Sunday May 3, 2020
- Click on the image at the top of article to enlarge it. You should see four periodic tables, each with a distinct trend. Read each description below each periodic table.
- 1) Write a short essay summarizing what each periodic table shows. The essay should be four paragraphs (i.e.one paragraph for each trend).
- 2) After your essay, draw a periodic table with arrows to illustrate the following three trends; i) atomic radius, ii) electronegativity, and iii) ionization energy. The arrows should illustrate the directions in which each trend is increasing or decreasing.
- 3) When finished, submit a typed document or a picture of your handwritten work into Google classroom no later than Sunday 5-3-20.
