Updates 4/16
We’ve got quite a bit to read through, so have a seat!
As I mentioned earlier this week, moving forward your science work is going to start to look a little different than simply “NewsELA and IXL.” In order to keep things more organized for both you and I, we are going to start to transition over to Google Classroom to turn in assignments. This work will be graded as normal assignments would, and recorded in the Gradebook on Student/Parent Connect
Many of you have emailed me your Science Project sheet already. If you did, I am going to ask you to turn it in again through Google Classroom once I get it set up (the class is set up but the option to turn in the assignment is not)! It should be as simple as copy/pasting your information!
Google Classroom also give us the opportunity to more easily chat, using a google hangout attached the the class specifically. I know I said I would set up meetings with you all this week, but we’ve been working behind the scenes to set up a more consistent schedule for all the teachers. That said, I am pretty available today and tomorrow if you would like to chat, just let me know! I am currently spending most of my time at the computer.
Without further ado, here are the class codes for each hour’s Google Classroom
!!PLEASE make sure you do the correct hour!!
SECOND HOUR: nelq5np
THIRD HOUR: te6uouu
FOURTH HOUR: xtj3lb6
FIFTH HOUR: vpfq7ra
SIXTH HOUR: mufn36q
1) To enroll, please go to classroom.google.com
2) Be sure you are signed in to your school account
3) Hit the + in the top right corner
4) Type in the correct code for your hour
Then you are all set!

Monday, April 13th
Hello everybody and welcome back from break!
I hope you all had a chance to rest up to the best of your ability during our week of. More importantly, I hope you all are remaining healthy and distanced! Still no baby on our end, but we are only 12 days away from her due date!
Now that we have been given the official order to remain out of the school building for the remainder of this school year, things are going to work a little different moving forward.
I would like to, again, stress to you THE SCHOOL YEAR IS NOT OVER, the school building is simply closed. You do not have a 5 month summer vacation!
Advisory Students
Each week I am going to start a direct conversation with the students who are in my advisory and their parents, regardless of if you finished your weekly work or not. This can be either through email, google hangout, or by phone call. If you are in my advisory, expect something from me soon to figure out the details.
Google Hangout
I am going to start scheduling google hangouts, by hour, this week. Once I have time slots figured out, I will email you an invitation to your school email. I will also post the schedule on here.
Assignments
Expect that the assignments are going to evolve to be a bit more involved than a simple IXL and NewsELA. That will not be the case this week, as we take the time to figure out student access to resources needed moving forward. This week, the work will be as it was before break.
That brings me to…
Assignment for the Week of April 13th
(This will be due April 18th)
IXL
Section H: Kinetic and Potential Energy
Lessons 1-4
You will need to score 80s to get full credit
NewsELA
You will be reading the article
Using the laws of motion to explain what happens when cars collide
You will have the usual assignments with this article
1) While reading the article, make the usual 10 annotations. Highlight three of these in green and connect them to ideas, experiments, or demonstration that we’ve done in class.
2) AFTER reading the article, complete the Quiz. This WILL NOT be reset, take your time and read for the answers.
3) Complete the assigned writing for the article.
I am looking forward to our Google Hangouts to actually be able to talk to everyone! Please, remain safe and do your best to stay on top of your work!

Update Following Governor Whitmer’s Orders
Hello students and families,
I did a quick recording to update you on where we go from here. Yesterday, Governor Whitmer issued the order that school buildings are to remain closed for the remainder of the school year.
Students, you may have taken this to me that school is out for the Summer, that is not the case. Information is minimal at this point, and it is an ever-changing scenario, but I wanted to give you updates in areas that I am able to.
If you would rather read than listen, here is the basic summary of it.
Science Fair Projects
– You till need to do the parts that were assigned to you three weeks ago. This is something that can still be done at home, with minimal resources needed.
– Actually doing your experiment, buying materials, meeting with your partner, etc. is no longer something we are asking of you.
– If you are able to do your experiments in the comfort of your home, and you would like to, I encourage you to see it through!
Weekly Work
– Next week is Spring Break, you are on break. You will have no new assignments from me.
– If you have not finished the last 3 weeks of work, please do so.
– Those of you staying on top of your work, thank you!
Group “Hangout”
– We need to social distance ourselves, but only physically.
– I’ve had numerous emails asking if we can Zoom, my answer to that is no.
– We CAN, however, do a google hangout. You will need to be logged in to your school account to do so.
– This will happen after Spring Break.
That’s all I’ve got for you at this time. Enjoy your week off but remember, we did not close schools for you to go hang out with your friends. If we wanted all of you together, schools would not have been closed.
Take care of yourselves, be safe,
-Mr. Bailey

Weeks 3: March 30th-April 4th
Hello everyone and welcome to Week 3 of our homeschooling experience.
This work will, once again, be due on Saturday at noon!
This is going to be the last week of work that you will be receiving from me at this point. Next week is Spring break, and based on the information we have, we will be back in school the week after. Of course, this is always a changing situation, so that too may change. What I can say is that no matter what, you will not have science work next week (unless you still need to work on your project).
Anyhow, back to business!
Assignment for NewsELA
You will be working on, and completing the article
Earth’s Natural Resources
This is a small preview of some of the ideas we will be learning about in our next Unit in class.
As usual, you will need to do the following three things for your assignment.
1) Come up with 10 annotations while reading the article, three of these should be connections to classroom work. Highlight these connections in green.
2) Complete the Quiz Assignment (This cannot be reset, so read carefully)
3) Complete the writing Assignment (Many of you are forgetting this part, and losing points)
Assignment for IXL
You will be working on Section J: Lessons 1 through 4.
There were many more students who did their IXL during Week 2, which is excellent! This week you have 4 sections that are mostly review to ideas we’ve learned about in class.
Your goal score should be a minimum of 80
Science fair Projects
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Again I want to stress that you should NOT be meeting up with your partner in person to work on stuff for your projects right now. We are under an order to stay inside for the next three weeks. What I am asking you to do for your projects currently does not involve leaving your house.
Remember to use the PowerPoint and my voice recording to assist you with this assignment. They can be found in the post below this one.
You are doing amazing stuff here guys, I am so proud of you for sticking to your education. Enjoy your break next week, and I hope to see you the week after!

Google Slides to Help With Your Experiments
Hello everyone,
I wanted to send out this Google Slideshow I was working on to help you potentially better understand what you needed to do for me in your time off. This is something you will need to turn in when we get back to school.
This was always going to be a home work assignment, so you will need to turn this in for a grade!
Again, you are only working on the parts that DO NOT require you to meet up with your partner. This can easily be done via phone, computer, or even an Xbox Live voice chat party! Please continue to socially distance yourselves from one another, I know it can be tough but I believe in you!
Science Fair Project Slides
I have also included a recording of myself explaining the PowerPoint to you in more detail. It is a lengthy recording (almost 20 minutes) but I wanted to try and provide you with more help than a PowerPoint can provide.
If the above link does not work, send me an email ASAP!
Best wishes,
Mr. Bailey

Work for the Week of March 23
Hello everyone and welcome to Week 2 of our homeschooling experience.
This work will, once again, be due on Saturday at noon!
Let me tell you, the idea of working from home is getting very boring now, I miss being in the classroom! At least there I had a window to look out, my office at home is in the basement.
Anyhow, back to business!
Assignment for NewsELA
You will be working on, and completing the article
All About Rocks
This is a small preview of some of the ideas we will be learning about in our next Unit in class.
As usual, you will need to do the following three things for your assignment.
1) Come up with 10 annotations while reading the article
2) Complete the Quiz Assignment
3) Complete the writing Assignment
Assignment for IXL
You will be working on Section I: Lessons 1 and 2.
Many of you did excellent during the first week’s assignment, and this one should be significantly shorter. Still, don’t wait until the last minute to do it!
This Section is all about thermal Energy, so most of it should be a review of ideas we have already discussed extensively in class.
Your goal score should be a minimum of 80!
I am finalizing a PowerPoint to help you out, check back every so often to get that!
Final Thoughts
I was so happy to hear from so many of you about what your week was like. There are some fun things going on in your lives, while still staying safe inside! Please always feel free to send me some enjoyable emails, we don’t always need to be focused on business!

Just a Small Little Update
Hello students,
So I tried something new today. I am including a short recording of myself, audio only, to give you an update of how things are going. I do apologize if I sound a little confused, I didn’t have a script and was distracted by a couple of cats!
Our first week is just about over, and it seems that you all are getting a hang on things. I’m incredibly proud of you all for being so flexible in your learning!
I’m still trying out new things on my end, but progress is being made!
One person I didn’t mention in my recording was the student who sent me a photo of a missing assignment (I’ll leave their name out of it). Report cards are still due in the time we will be gone, so if you have an assignment missing, and you are able to, find a way to get it to me so I can adjust your grades!
Hope to hear form some of you soon 🙂

Thursday, March 19th
Hello once again ladies and gentlemen. I understand that your work is not due until Saturday, but I am trying to be proactive in feedback for you, so I have been checking daily on work being done.
NewsELA
Currently, only 78 students have accessed the article. Of those 78, not everyone has done all they are supposed to. Please remember, you need to annotate, do the quiz, AND complete the writing assignment!
IXL
Only 41 students have completed all 5 lessons for IXL this week. Although it appears many of you are working on them today! Remember you need to finish 1-5 in category B, not just the first one!
For those of you staying on top of your assignments, awesome job! I know it can be a challenge to get focused when you are stuck at home with your video games and phones, but you are handling it like professionals!
If you have any questions, please comment with them on this post. I will try to put together a post answering your questions specifically; maybe I’ll even record myself doing so, I can’t have you forgetting what I sound like!
You guys are all amazing students, and I am even starting to miss some of you!
Stay safe, stay healthy

Mid-Week Update
Hello students,
Checking in to IXL and NewsELA it looks like about 50% of the students are done or close to being done with their assignments. If you have not started them yet, it may be a good time to do so!

Science Work for the Week of March 16th
Hello class, so begins our first week at learning through the computer. While you may be lucky enough to not have to listen to my voice, you still need to get some work done.
For each of these assignments, please be sure you are logged in to the correct account to complete them.
Both of these assignments are due Saturday, March 21st, by noon!
Your first assignment (please log in to NewsELA with your school gmail account):
The NewsELA article “How Does a Thermometer Measure Temperature?”
The assignment instructions can be found at the top of the article:
1) Read and annotate 10 times, at least 3 annotations must be connections to class activities (highlight class connections in green).
2) Complete the Quiz
3) Complete the Writing Assignment
Assignment Number Two: IXL
(If you do not know your IXL log in, please EMAIL me ASAP)
IXL Science Section B “Designing Experiments”
You will need to complete Lessons 1-5 in this section.
The IXL assignment is meant to give you additional information on designing and performing an experiment. This will help you to work on your Science Fair Projects over the three week period.
Everything above is due Saturday, March 21st, by noon!
Remember, when we are able to return to school, you will need to have the planning stages of your experiment typed up neatly and ready to be turned in as a summative grade.
You will need to have the following done:
- The science question you are investigating
- The hypothesis stated as an if/then statement
- The procedure to complete the experiment
- A list of materials needed
- Research about your topic
- The Independent variable, dependent variable and control variable.
If you require any assistance during the week, please let me know! I am still your teacher and I will always do what I can top provide you with the help you may need!
