Illustrated Dictionary for October 23rd
Howdy folks,
Today in class we had 2 assignments. One of these assignments was the section 1.2 guided reading for the textbook, while I originally said this was homework, I have decided we will have class time to work on it tomorrow.
The second assignment, which if not done is homework due tomorrow is your Illustrated Dictionary.
These will be the 4 terms, be sure to cut a “fold” so you are able to fold back each tab (see below)
Each definition, in your own words, should be written on the notebook portion, and the picture on the back side of each “fold.”

Article of the Week Homework
Students
Do not forget that we started working on Articles of the Week on NewsELA.
Remember, your login information for the website is your district Login. While reading the article, you are tasked with highlighting unknown words in RED and highlighting main ideas in YELLOW. You also need to answer to the Quiz AFTER reading the article.
If you were absent on Friday, you will need your group code. Please email me directly for that information, as it is different for each student!
This is due Monday at 11:59pm
HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND

Bryant Robotics Team
Bryant Middle School is pleased to be able to have a Robotics Team. We will be building and programming a robot. We will then take our robot to several robotic competitions. We will be selecting up to 15 students to join our team. Only those students who signed up and then participated in the informational meeting (the meeting will be on Thursday during Advisory) can apply to be part of the team.
Please use your school email address to fill out the application.

Density Double-Entry Journal
Hello everyone,
This post is primarily for students who did not finish today’s assignment in class and took a book home to help. The sections you need to do for your Double Entry Journal are Density (p.11), Liquid Layers, Density of solids (pg. 12), Solving for Density, and Using Density to Identify Substances (pg. 13).
I wish I was able to get anyone absent caught up on this assignment, but I am running in to difficulties with the online textbook, and to upload any scans or photos of the book violates the Copyright and can cause trouble in that regard. If you were absent, I will gladly help you out tomorrow when you return to school!

Classwork from Tuesday and Wednesday
Hello everyone,
I apologize for the late post, my classroom scanner wasn’t copying things correctly, so I couldn’t get the assignments on the blog!
Tuesday
On Tuesday we did a short lab involving Qualitative and Quantitative characteristics of candy. We used peppermints in class, but if you don’t have them at home, you may use any other candy. This worksheet can be found HERE (Candy Activity).
Wednesday
Wednesday’s assignment was a reading activity. You will need to read What is Matter Reading and talk to the text.
REMINDER
Your Scientific Method Test will be tomorrow, Friday, October 5th!

Collaboration and Circuitry
Hello families,
Parents, this update is primarily for your benefit to give you an idea of what your child has been working on in class this week. Our focus skill this week in class has been collaboration and considering other’s ideas other than your own. The scientific concept we used to practice was how to build a circuit.
This activity has been nearly 100% open-ended, with student designing and buildings circuits, and using what they found out to design and build a flashlight using minimal materials to do so.
Before the first activity, I did not talk to students about circuits, it was all done by their prior knowledge. Their first task was to design a simple circuit, some examples below.
Using their blueprints, the next day students were tasked with building a working circuit using only a battery, a bulb, and 2 wires. At this point, I still did not tell the students anything about how to create a complete circuit.
Once the students had the chance top build the circuit, we started a discussion about what is necessary for a circuit to be complete. In essence, the students discovered how a circuit works through their own inquiry, instead of simply sitting and having it told to them. Now, I don’t want anyone to think I am not acting as a teacher, I was there through the process guiding, asking questions, and then summarizes and clarifying at the end. Instead of the traditional teaching and then a lab, the reverse is done so students are able to make discoveries and build ideas on their own, which is the essence of science.
Part 2
Once we built an understanding of basic circuits, students were introduced to a new challenge. They needed to use what they learned to create a flashlight. However, they were limited in the materials they were allowed to use in the process.
Materials:
- Battery
- Bulb
- 2Wires
- Paper Towel Roll (THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO DONATED)
- 2 Paperclips
- 3 Brass Fasteners
- 1 Rubber Band
- Electrical Tape
- Clay
While it was not necessary to turn the light on and off, that was an extra challenge introduced to the students who wanted to undertake it. Students, again, went back to the literal drawing board to plan out their invention.
The final step was using the materials to actually build the flashlight. There were some REALLY cool concepts created!

Friday, September 22
If you were absent today, or were here but because it was so hot your brain melted and you forgot your homework, you can find both assignments here.
First, on 4B create an illustrated dictionary for the following terms: Qualitative, Quantitative, Inference, and Variable.
On 5A, work on and glue THIS sheet in your Interactive Notebook.
Stay cool,

Wednesday, September 20
Hello everyone,
Today in class we continued our discussion of Observations and Inferences.
If you were absent YESTERDAY
You will need to use your google powers to research the difference between an observation and an inference. I can give a very brief idea below:
Observation: Gathering information using your 5 senses
Inference: Making a prediction based on what you have observed.
You will need to work through THIS sheet, and glue it on page 3A of your Interactive Notebook. It is not very difficult at all.
If you were absent TODAY
On Page 3B, write a sentence for EACH inference you chose on the Boy in the Water sheet. In your sentence, explain why that inference could happen based on your observations in the picture.
When that is finished, research Qualitative and Quantitative Observations. On Page 4A, find one object around your house and write 8 qualitative observations and 4 quantitative observations!

September 18th
Alright everyone, we had a pretty busy day in class today. If you were absent today please follow this post closely.
First
You need to update you table of contents.
Second
Fold you reading page from Friday in half and glue it on to page 2A of your Interactive Notebook.
Lastly
You will need to cut a sheet of computer paper in half. On page 2B of your Interactive Notebook, put one like of glue down the pink line on the left of the page.
Once the little bit is glued in, make 5 equal sized boxes on the page.
Each box will be one of the following terms: Scientific Method, Observation, Hypothesis, Experiment, Conclusion.
At this point, your page should look like this
Once that is done, cut along the lines you drew to create a foldable. Be sure NOT to cut the notebook page.
Inside each fold you will draw a picture to Illustrate that term, and write the definition in your own words.
This is due Tuesday, September 19th and the start of class!

Classwork/Homework for Friday 9/15
Hello everybody,
If you did not finish your Talk-to-the-Text Scientific Method sheet today in class, and forgot it at school, never fear it is….
HERE
This also goes for anyone who was absent today. This is a simple assignment to take care of on your own. Simply highlight important information, or underline. That’s not all! You will also want to use the margins (white space) of the paper to write your own thoughts, questions, or summaries of the information.
I need this done by Monday so we are able to use them for the next activity.
Have a great weekend everyone!
-Mr. Bailey
