Assignment for 9/18

Today in class we worked on the difference between observations and inferences.

Observations- things we can experience happening with our 5 senses. We know they are happening because we experience them. Saying ice is cold is an example of an observation using our sense of touch.

Inferences- predictions or ideas we have, that may or may not be true, based on observations. For example, if it is cloudy outside, I may make the inference that it is going to rain. It may rain, it may not rain, therefor I made an inference based on the sky being cloudy.

To help you practice identifying differences, use the sheet below.

Boy in the Water Sheet

We will be going over this in class tomorrow!

Wednesday’s Bottle Flipping Lab

Parents,

Tomorrow in class we are going to be doing our first lab experiment. The students have been designing their own labs to test what changes can affect a water bottle flip. I am supplying majority of the materials, but some students designed an experiment that may require more, specific, items. With your blessing of course, the students will drop of their supplies in my room. If you would rather them not bring something they ask for, then that is absolutely fine and we can find a replacement item.

SIGNING UP FOR REMIND

Hello students (and families),

Today in class, students signed up to receive REMIND notifications. This works utilizing the traditional text messaging feature of a phone, and allows me to send out protected texts to students to “remind” them about upcoming dates at school. When signing up for remind, I do not have access to phone numbers, and my personal number is not given. Singing up is easy, and parents are encouraged to sign up as well (to avoid the “I don’t have homework” story)!

REMIND

Above is a link to a pdf that explains different ways to receive my notifications.

If you are viewing this post through your phone already, you should also be able to sign up using the link I will provide below:

Welcome to the 2018/2019 School Year!

Hello students and families,

I would like to take a moment to welcome you to the new school year and give a quick overview of some expectations for the upcoming school year. If you found your way to my blog using the syllabus I passed out in class, much of this information will be repeated from there.

Who I am?

My name is Matthew Bailey, and I teach 7th Grade science at Bryant. I have been teaching the 7th grade course for going on 4 years (with an additional year of public school teaching experience at the Kindergarten level). I truly do enjoy science and what it has to offer to both students and adults. In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my wife and 2 cats, I love movies, I play video games, and I try to find time to read. I did my undergraduate studies at the University of Michigan – Dearborn focusing on Science and Math, and currently am attending Wayne State University to obtain a Master’s degree in English as a Second Language (due to finish in December).

When it comes to teaching, my philosophy is heavily influenced by inquiry. It is my goal to not spend each day in class lecturing, but instead promoting critical thinking and urging students to ask questions and explore their own methods of finding a conclusion.  I want students to not only develop science knowledge, but skills that they can take with them outside of the classroom into any real-world setting.

Classroom Supplies

If possible, I suggest that each student have the following:

  • Spiral Notebook
  • 100 page Composition Notebook (college bound)
  • Folder
  • Colored Pencils

If supplies are difficult to come by, please email me or have your student talk to me after class. I will help where I can!

More details can be found in the syllabus sent home with your student, or conveniently found HERE

Syllabus 2018-2019 – Google Docs

Students, please bring your signed syllabus to me by Thursday to get your formative points and start the year off right!

I look forward to the year together,

Mr. Bailey

Dearborn Robotics Event Volunteers

Hello families,
I’ve been asked to place this on my Blog to help find anyone willing to volunteer time to a robotics event being held at McCollough-Unis school in a couple weeks.
This event is important to the district to help make the robotics groups involved at the school become more well-known in the community. If you have any of the particular skills being looked for, or would just like to help out, please read below.
In less than 2 weeks, on Saturday, May 12McCollough-Unis School will fill with 24 FIRST LEGO League Robotics teams and spectators!

We urgently need Dearborn leaders to fill key roles as Judges (20), Head Referee (1), Referees (6),  Field Manager (1), Field Resetters (6), Scorekeepers (3),  Pit Manager (1), MC (1),  DJ (1), and Game Announcers (2). These jobs require advance registration, online training and certification, and a full Saturday, May 12, commitment (6:30 a.m. to 5:15 p.m.).

We also need a Production Manager to coordinate the Audio Visual System, 2 video camera operators,  photographers, the MC, game announcers, and the DJ.
Less technical, yet essentialroles include: 1 scorekeeper assistant, 1 timekeeper, 2 score runners, 3 pit runners, 1 pit practice table coordinator,  3 pit practice table attendants, 1 pit technician, 3 pit monitors, 4 game queuers, 4 volunteer check-in,  4 team check-in, 4 Volunteer Room attendants,  6 door monitors-parking coordinators-security-information, 9 judge queuers, and 10 concessions workers.

If every Dearborn school furnishes

4

volunteers, we will have ample manpower!

The Mc-Unis PTSA always provides a spectacular complimentary feast for volunteers (breakfast, lunch, and beverages, 6:30 a.m. – 4 p.m.). Officially registered volunteers get a lanyard and event STAFF t-shirt,

and

official service credit and recognition.

We are counting on Dearborn administrators to enthusiastically join in the incredible fun that is FIRST Robotics!
Please bring your staff along, too! All FIRST events are free and open to the public. All district robotics teams are encouraged to attend!
(6) FLL Volunteer Job Board (showing assignments)
With jobs and links to descriptions and training documents.
Please contact Renee Newman, Volunteer Coordinator, with your questions by replying to this email, emailing renee@dyscalculia.org, or texting (313) 300-1901 with your name and question.

We can’t do this without YOU!

Thank you for your precious time and commitment to STEM!

Sincerely,

Renee Newman

Weathering Double Entry Journal

Hey everyone,

I know many of you did not have time to finish your Double Entry Journals in class today. Due to a shortage of the books we needed to use, I was unable to allow anyone to take the book home.

You can still access the pages needed for the Double Entry Journal through iLearn.

Log in to my iLearn class, there should only be one option that is a PDF titled Weathering Double Entry Journal. Opening this will provide you the pages you need to finish the assignment DUE TOMORROW!

Also, remember to start bringing in your science fair projects! We need to start presenting them. If you plan to try and be a finalist int he science fair you HAVE to present this week!
