Week 1 of the 2020 School Year
Hello families, if you have found your way to this blog post, there is a chance I will be your child’s science teacher for the year. This is a strange start to the school year, there is no doubt about it. In an attempt to make things at least somewhat more manageable, I wanted to provide you a rough overview for 7th Grad week 1 (understand this is all subject to change)!
Monday, August 31: Teachers will be attempting to contact and converse with the students and families who they have in their advisory classes this year.
Tuesday, Sept. 1: 1/2 day schedule will be followed. Each class meets for 22 minutes beginning at 8:25. There is a schedule floating around out there, perhaps in your email. You will be meeting through Zoom, and we are working on the easiest way to get that Zoom session link to you.
Wednesday, Sept. 2: No zoom meetings for 7th graders. During the morning, 7th graders will come to Bryant and pick up materials. Their core teachers will be there, but in order to follow proper guidelines, will not be available for conferencing.
Thursday, Sept. 3: 1/2 day schedule with zoom meetings again.
The week after, starting September 8, a different schedule starts. You have this schedule in an email.

Week of June 8th
Hello everyone and welcome to the finish line!
I’ll start off with what I’m sure all of you want to hear; you have no new work for Science this week!
As the year comes to a close, I would urge everyone with missing work to please complete it bu Tuesday. Many of you have completed assignments over the weekend, and it is my goal to begin grading those. Please try to refrain form emailing me asking why your grade hasn’t been updated. It will take me some time to get through all of the work I have received. I promise you, it will get done, just be patient and allow me the time to get it done.
I have also received many emails about NewsELA having issues this week. I will keep this in mind when I go through to grade the assignment.
Parents, if you have not already done so, please head to the school blog to complete the survey on reopening the schools for next school year. Your opinion in the matter is important. Please respond by June 12th.

Week of June 1st
Hello everybody and welcome to June!
The end of the school year is upon us! While things have been a bit different, you have absolutely earned your relaxation.
This will be the last week that I give you an assignment, so let’s finish out strong.
Assignment
You will be working on a NewsELA article related to Volcanoes, as a follow up to your assignment last week which showed how scientist can predict eruptions.
The link to the article can be found HERE or through Google Classroom.
As usual, you will need to do the following:
1) Read through the article completely while making 10 annotations
2) Complete the Quiz AFTER reading
3) Complete the Writing Assignment
I’ve bolded steps 1 and 3, because for MANY of you, you have decided just guessing on the quiz is enough. If you do this, you will fail the assignment. Be sure to read the article and annotate before doing the quiz.
Late Work
If you have late or incomplete assignments. The deadline to turn these in will be Tuesday, June 9th at noon. I will not accept any work after that point, because I need to have time to grade it all before report cards are due on Thursday.

Week of May 11th
Hello again everybody,
Welcome, once again, to another week of online learning. I hope everyone is doing well, staying safe, and trying to keep yourselves entertained!
Before we move on to our assignment for the week, I just wanted to take a moment to remind everyone: If you finish an assignment late, I may not see it right away to grade it. You will need to let me know it is done if your grade isn’t updated by Monday night.
Now, for this week’s work:
Your assignment will be similar to two week’s ago. On Google Classroom you will see “Remote Learning Lesson 2: Algorithms”
An algorithm is a process, or set of rules, that are followed in order to solve a problem.
Here is a video of me explaining some parts of the assignment. Fair warning, Evelyn kept me up for most of the night, so this is me on like 4-5 hours of broken sleep.
Like last time, there is a Google Slideshow to read through, and a Google Document to fill out and submit.
This assignment is due Friday, May 15th
This week, we are going to begin meeting virtually as classes again. Our schedule will be the same as before, but this time we will use the Big Blue Button option on iLearn.

Week of May 4th Assignment
Hello ladies and gentlemen,
I would like to start by thanking all of you who reached out to congratulate Mrs. Bailey and I on the birth of our daughter, Evelyn. I could spend an entire blog talking about how great she is, but that’s not why we are here. To those of you who emailed me with questions, I am going to work through everything I have received to help. Please be patient as I do so, there’s about 6 days worth.
NOW, YOUR ASSIGNMENT(S)
To summarize, due May 8th (details below):
1) NewsELA Article assigned on google Classroom Today
2) Google Document from Google Classroom last week
3) Science Projects from… January
We are going to go back to doing a NewsELA Article this week, but I’ll explain why below!
A link to the Article assignment can be found on Google Classroom
The reason we are going back to NewsEla this week is because I wanted to give people a chance to also finish last week’s work.
Last week was your first real assignment completely on Google Classroom. For many of you, you had questions and did not feel confident in submitting your work until I answered them. However, I was not available to help and wanted to give you this week to finish and get answers from me.
If you did not finish last week’s Google Doc about Asking Questions, you can continue to work on it this week. I will still be reporting to your advisory teacher that it is not finished, do not argue with them when they tell you that!
Also do on May 8th (Friday) are your Science Projects. I have gotten many emails about these and I will try to help before they are due. As I said in class, though, waiting until the last moment will cause me to be very busy with my daughter.
If you have questions you would like to discuss directly with me “face-to-face” I will be available for a video conference tomorrow from 12-1, or another time if scheduled ahead. Just let me know and we will solve the problem.
Thank you again for your understanding in my absence last week, I will work quickly to get caught back up with you!
-Mr. Bailey (and Evelyn)

The Week of April 27th
Hello hello ladies and gentleman, and welcome to another week of virtual learning.
Due to issues that were made apparent last week, I will not be able to do Hangout lessons with you at this time. Instead, I will be pre-recording the lesson and sharing that video with each of you.
It should come as no surprise that I do two things A LOT in this video; move my hands a ton, and change the volume of my voice. You have been warned!
Video Here
The assignment this week will be a little different as we transition away from IXL and NewsELA and shift focus back to our regular curriculum.
The focus this week will be on Science in general, specifically “What is Science?“
You will be reading and watching stories of different scientists, to further develop an understanding on how we use science. especially in situations like the one we are currently living through!
To access your assignment, please go to our Google Classroom and be sure to log in to your School Account.
You will be using a Google Slides presentation to work through the assignment, both of which can be found when you begin the assignment on Classroom.
As I told many of you last week, Evelyn is due to be born no later than Wednesday of this week (finally), so I may be unavailable to help if you have questions. Once I am certain of the date and time, I will give you the relevant information!

IXL Section C
Students,
You were assigned IXL Section C this week. In this section you needed to do lessons 1-3. This was outlined in my post on Monday. I am currently looking through the completed works, and hardly anyone has finished the assignment.
I would like to remind you that this assignment is graded. It is the first graded assignment of this card marking, and many of you will be starting out at a very low grade.
If you check the grade book and you do not have a score, that means you have not finished the assignment!
Take the time to get this assignment finished.

Week of April 20th
Hello class and welcome to week number…5 (maybe) of our online learning!
For this week, I am not going to assign you too much new work. I want to give you guys, and myself, some time to get more familiar with how things will work for the remainder of the school year. It may seem like a lot of work, but for those of you who have been doing everything I’ve asked until now, it is hardly anything.
Your MOST important job this week (many have done this already):
!!PLEASE make sure you do the correct hour!!
SECOND HOUR: nelq5np
THIRD HOUR: te6uouu
FOURTH HOUR: xtj3lb6
FIFTH HOUR: vpfq7ra
SIXTH HOUR: mufn36q
1) To enroll, please go to classroom.google.com
2) Be sure you are signed in to your school account
3) Hit the + in the top right corner
4) Type in the correct code for your hour
Now for your assignments:
Number one, Science Projects
(due May 8th, but STRONGLY recommended to do this week)
When you get into your Google Classroom, you should see a “Science Fair Projects” assignment. If you already did what you were asked to do for your project, you will just need to add the information to the Google Doc on there, submit, and you’re done!
If you have not started your project work, you will want to do so now.
You will need to have the following done:
Here is a PowerPoint to help explain each part
- The science question you are investigating
- The hypothesis stated as an if/then statement
- The Independent variable, dependent variable and control variable.
- A list of materials needed
- The procedure to complete the experiment
- Research about your topic
Assignment Number 2: IXL Section C “Engineering Practices”
(due April 25th)
As usual, your goal is 80 on each section.
Google “Hangouts”
Starting this week, I am going to be meeting with each class over a google hangout. Our priority will be any questions you have related to your work, but if we take care of business, we can just chat with each other. This will also be set up through your Google Classroom, so it is VERY important to enroll in the correct class.
Hangout Schedule
Tuesday
Second Hour: 12:00-12:19
Third Hour: 12:20-12:39
Fourth Hour: 12:40-1:00
Thursday
Fifth Hour: 12:00-12:20
Sixth Hour: 12:20-12:40
12:40-1:00 Anyone who may have missed their meeting
These are just the scheduled times for us to meet, outside of these hours I may be available, but other teachers will get priority during those meeting times.
