Government – Chapter 1.2 Vocab

11. democracy: government that is ruled by the people

12. rule: govern

13. landowner: a person who owns land

14. dictator: a ruler who rules anyway that he wants

15. revolt: rebel; go against the government

16. popular: people like you; famous

17. unpopular: people don’t like you; infamous

18. Assembly: a group of people who make laws

19. Population: number of people who live in a place.

20. Aristocrats: wealthy people

21. Representative: a person who speaks for you

22. Republic: a government with representatives

23. Wealthy: rich

24. Elect: Vote

25. Consul: a leader in the government

26. Senate: the part of government that makes laws

27. Senator: a person who makes laws

28. Permanent: Stays forever

29. Temporary: Stays for a short amount of time

7. representative: a person who works in the government and represents the citizens.

8. amendment: a law that is added to the Constitution.

9. Constitution: the laws of a country.

10. 13th amendment: slavery was abolished and it became illegal.

11. 14th amendment: all African Americans are citizens and have equal rights.

12. 15th amendment: African American men can vote.
