I am so very excited to announce that I was this year’s recipient of The SuSu Project put on by the wonderful organization Blue Hands United! This is a Dearborn based non-profit for families who have loved ones with autism. I am so grateful in accepting this donation to our classroom. It is amazing to have the support of these wonderful people in our community. My students and I can’t thank them enough! Also, a big thank you to all those who stopped by to congratulate me.

October Learning Objectives

This month in ELA we will continue to practice narrative text features such as author, characters, setting, and plot. We will be focusing on retelling stories using pictures or with prompting from adults, retelling the story in our own words. So far we have read “The Very Hungry Caterpillar.” This week we will be reading “Brown Bear Brown Bear What Do You See?” Then, we will finish off the month with some Pete the Cat Halloween inspired texts. In addition to narratives, we have been reading/will continue to read poems and nursery rhymes. We will continue to work on Pre-Primer sight words, rhyming, and letter sounds each week.

In math my kindergarteners are continuing basic number concepts to 10-counting objects, pictures, and drawings with one to one correspondence, identifying numbers 1-10, and writing numbers. My first graders will continue to practice addition with visuals and story problems (with the use of pictures). Then, we will begin solving subtraction problems with pictures.

Our studies on force-push and pulls will continue in science, and our lessons on responsibility, following rules, and being a good friend will continue in social studies.

As always, practice sight words and reading at home with your child, and thank you for your continued support! If you have any questions, please contact me via Dojo.

This week we will be reading “The Very Hungry Caterpillar.” If you have it at home, feel free to read it to your child. You can also find animated versions of the story on YoutTube below. We will be working on retelling the story using pictures. This story is great for practicing sequencing, counting, colors, food vocabulary, days of the week, and the life cycle of a butterfly.

Sight words this week

Please continue to practice words from past weeks.

Review: up and down

New words this week: help and for

We will be reading “The Little Red Hen” this week, so if you have that book at home, you are welcome to read it to your child for extra practice. You can also access an animated version of the story by searching “The Little Red Hen” on BookFlix at kids.mel.org/storytime or YouTube.

The word help will be repeated many times throughout this book.

Apple Orchard Field Trip

Although it rained most of the day, we made the most of our field trip to Plymouth Apple Orchards! The kids listened to an informational talk on how apples are grown, took a tractor ride, picked an apple, chose a pumpkin from the patch, and enjoyed cider and donuts 🙂

Take a peek at our day below!

This weeks sight words & more!

This weeks focus sight words are: look and can.

Please use the flashcards sent home to practice. There are also many free Ipad apps and games you can download.

Continue to practice previous words: a, the, see,

In other news: This past week in math we read Pete the Cat and his Four Groovy Buttons. We did many ELA activities around the book  regarding characters, setting, events, and opinion writing. We also used Pete’s jacket and buttons as a template for solving subtraction problems. Take a peak below!

September Learning Objectives

We have been busy so far this September in our kindergarten/1st grade class 🙂 In math, we have been/will be practicing how to count objects and pictures from 1-10 or 1-20, how to write numbers, how to decompose numbers up to 10 in multiple ways, and how to add and subtract using pictures.

In ELA we have been learning how to trace/write our names, write opinion sentences, and how to identify text features such as characters, setting, and events. We will be reading fictional stories (We LOVE Pete the Cat!), poems, and non-fiction books. We will continue to practice letters, letter sounds, and Pre-Primer sight words (2 a week, they will be posted on my blog). This week’s words were the and see.

In science we are learning about force-objects that push and pull. In social studies we are learning about citizenship-how to be a kind friend, responsible, and how to follow rules so we can stay safe.

Please continue to practice sight words at home 😀 If I have not already, I will send home flashcards.

Also, please please sign up for Class Dojo if you have not already. I can assist you if needed!
