Happy Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving break is almost here. That means no school Wednesday 11/21-Friday 11/23.

Please try and turn in the family survey for our upcoming social studies unit that was sent home by tomorrow 11/21 or Monday when we come back from break.

Enjoy a restful Thanksgiving, eat lots of food, and have fun spending time with your families!

Hey Bandits, all classrooms are still collecting for the canned food drive this year. It ends this week and many classrooms haven’t donated anything. Please check your cabinets and grab what you can spare and send it in tomorrow so we can fill some of these boxes. Last year we collected over 1 ton of donations which benefited so many families in need. This year we have about 100 lbs of food. I know we can dig deeper than this!  I look forward to seeing what we can collect in the next to days to show how generous we are at Nowlin. Go Bandits!

Ocean Unit

This week we read informational texts about the ocean and its’ marine life. We practiced identifying the main idea and analyzing photos in the texts. The kids had so much fun learning about the ocean habitat, its’ animals and features of their bodies. We learned how to describe animals by using bridge maps, read adapted books with lots of visuals, used our senses to explore a touch and feel ocean book, created ocean crafts, and even made ocean cups to eat!

Canned Food Drive 11/12-11/16

Nowlin will be participating in a canned food drive sponsored by Zaman International, next week from November 12-16. Please consider donating to those less fortunate this holiday season. Anything helps 🙂 If you would like to participate, send the cans in to school with your child. We will have boxes in the classrooms to collect the cans.

Together as a community we can fight hunger.

Parent Teacher Conferences

Just a reminder that conferences will be held tonight November 8th from 4:00-7:00 p.m. If you cannot make it tonight, we will also be holding them next Tuesday and Thursday. Please let me know when you are available 🙂

Halloween

This Wednesday, the ASD classrooms will be hosting Halloween centers. We will be making crafts, treats, and more! If you would like to come in to help and take part with your child, you are more than welcome to! We will begin at 2:00 p.m.

Students are able to wear their costumes the last hour of the school day so please pack in their backpacks if they plan on dressing up. Also, some parents have been asking about sending in Halloween treats. You are welcome to, but it is not mandatory. Hope to see some of you there!

As always, if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask 🙂

This week

This week in ELA we are beginning to read informational text. We will be focusing on one topic each week. This week we will be learning about Farm animals. We kicked off our study with reading an adapted text about farm animals. We answered important questions on each page with visuals, practiced our fine motor skills by creating a sheep craft, and enjoyed reading a touch and feel book about farm animals that was perfect for our sensory needs 🙂

New sight words this week: big and little

Spirit Day 10/19

With the Michigan State Vs. Michigan football game approaching this weekend, students are invited to participate in a spirit  day! This Friday, students are encouraged to wear their favorite teams apparel or colors.

Go green 😛 !

This week 10/15-10/19

This weeks new sight words are: you and me

We will be reading the book “Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?” We will be practicing retelling the story with pictures. This book is great for practicing animal vocabulary, color words, and the sight words: you, me, I, a, see, yellow, blue, red. If you have it at home, you are welcome to read it with your child. There is also an interactive read aloud on YouTube.
