Classroom News: 1-23-19

I hope everyone is enjoying their day off! Kindergarten had a great first half day on 1/22. The transition has been really smooth so far and I am very excited to be working with you for the rest of the year!

Just a reminder- Report cards will be going out this week. Please sign the gold envelope and bring it back to school empty as soon as possible.

Now that there is snow on the ground, please remember to send your child with snow boots and snow pants. If they do not have these items, they will still go out, but can only stay on the blacktop. Make sure to pack extra dry socks/refill dry clothes in the bags that stay in lockers (even with boots- socks are still getting wet!). We will go outside on the days the windchill is over 20. Continue to practice having your child zip their coats and put on their items by themselves in order for us to get outside in a timely fashion.

Language Arts: Please continue to fill out the nightly literacy recording sheets and return them every Monday. Extra copies are found under the homework tab.

Spelling- words were sent home at the beginning of the week. Your child will be tested on the three words of the week on Friday and 3 personal words they will be working on individually. These personal words were chosen by pre-tests given last week. On test day they will have the 3 pattern words and bonus word that follows the pattern.  If they learned the pattern, they will be able to spell the bonus word.  They will then complete the test with our spelling mom helpers.  Missed personal words will be on their test again the following week and we will move on with the new pattern.  Please keep all spelling notebooks in the reading bags and have them returned to school each day since we will be using them in class.

Reading Groups- I am also resuming guided strategy reading groups with the children after this weeks transition and once assessments are complete.  I have reorganized groups and reading bags will once again go home 3-4 times a week.  Continue practicing reading, sight words, and spelling words daily.  Use at least 1 night a week for writing practice with your child.  They can write about what they did in school, family time, friends, practices, etc.  Goals include capital letters at the start of the sentence only, punctuation at the end, spaces, and details in the writing.  We should be at about 2-3 sentences on 1 topic.

Math/Science/Social Studies  In Math we are starting with Module 16. We will be using area words such as enough.  Please continue to use words like longer/shorter, heavier/lighter, and more and less to keep the information fresh.  In Science we have been journaling the weather conditions and temperature to look for patterns.  We have noticed the temperature goes up in the afternoon and will investigate why soon.  We also discussed cause and effect for the clothing we chose for the weather. This week, we will be learning about Sunlight and it’s effect. In Social Studies, we started to share our timeline and will continue to do so this week.  I will be hanging them out in the hall for all to see. We will be starting our unit on Geography. Our goal is to have our class know their own personal address and phone number by the end of the year.

**Valentine’s Day**
We will not be having a party with parent volunteers,  but we will be having a treat and passing out Valentines. We will be celebrating on February 13th however, because the 14th is a half day for students. If you would like to volunteer to bring in the few items we need, there will be a signup genius link on this page shortly.  If your child chooses to make valentines to pass, please remember we have 18 children and have a valentine for everyone. If you are attaching a treat, no nuts of any kind please.  I am also including a few items we will need for the 100th day of school.  More information to come on that exciting event!
