Read Aloud with Mrs. Meseroll: Ish by Peter H. Reynolds

Read alouds are very beneficial to our children’s growth as readers.  When we read aloud we are sharing our love of reading and sending the message that reading is important.  We are also modeling phrased and fluent reading which is essential for comprehension.  It is also important to note that our children are able to comprehend difficult texts when they are read aloud.  What a great way to get your child thinking about books that they are not yet able to read independently.   I highly recommend that you read aloud to your child every evening…no matter how old he/she is!

Authentic Writing Opportunities

dog with a bumblebee stuffed animal

With all of the texting and social media that is available today I feel that we’re losing opportunities to engage in good old fashioned writing.  We all know that writing needs to be authentic in order to be meaningful but who can we have our children write to?  A great way to ensure that writing is authentic is to encourage children to write letters to family members, friends and even celebrities.

Speaking of celebrities, there is a popular series of books about a dog named Danny.  (see www.maryruthbooks.com for more information).  I just discovered that Danny the dog will “write” a letter back if you write to him.  What a great opportunity for authentic writing!

You can write to Danny at:

Mrs. Meseroll’s Favorite Reads

book display with a favorite book and description of why it is a favorite

Remember when you were young and you just had to have a copy of the book your teacher was reading in class?  Your teacher loved that book and made it special for you as well.  I think of this as the gift of reading and have been excited about sharing this with our students at Henry Ford.

In each hallway you will find a small table with one of my favorite books.  Next to it you will find a brief description and a personal connection or reason why I consider it a favorite.  The purpose of these displays is to boost excitement about reading and I’ve asked teachers to share them with their students as they move through the hallways.  Don’t be surprised if your child asks you to go to the library to check out one of my favorites…I promise that you’ll enjoy them too!

I will update the books every 2 weeks to keep things fresh so be sure to ask your child to tell you all about “Mrs. Meseroll’s Favorite Reads.”

Happy Reading!
