A New Round of Mrs. Meseroll’s Favorite Reads

When you’re at parent conferences or meetings, look for the new displays of Mrs. Meseroll’s Favorite Reads scattered throughout the building.  I replace them every two weeks to encourage everyone to read.  In addition to a favorite book, I include a brief summary and the reason why I recommend it.  You can always check them out from the library but note that I’m very happy to loan my titles out to your children too so encourage them to ask me!  The titles this week are:

Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo

Probuditi! by Chris Van Allsburg

Skippyjon Jones by Judy Schachner

Teeny Tiny Animals by Lexi Ryals

The Day the Crayons Came Home by Drew Daywalt

Upstairs Mouse, Downstairs Mole by Wong Herbert Yee

A Visit to the Library

I cannot praise our public libraries enough!  With cold weather creeping in, a trip to the library is just the thing to boost reading excitement!  Looking for some titles to check out?  Check out The Best Children’s Books website for titles organized by theme as well as Newbery and Caldecott winners.  Word of caution…avoid those levels!  Your child is NOT a number!  Most importantly, remember to have conversations about the books to focus on deep understanding.  Here’s a helpful comprehension parent bookmark to get you started.

Happy reading!

When your child finishes a great book and absolutely loves it, does she say, “I want to read another book like that!”  What a great problem to have!

When you have a child that is VERY interested in a book and wants more that are similar, put the google search engine to good use.  Type “If you like (Diary of a Wimpy Kid or The One and Only Ivan)” and see all the possible sites with suggestions pop up.  I recommend you use a link to goodreads.com.  They provide a list of books that your child may be interested in based on reader reviews.  Check out the link below for the 43 book suggestions given if you like Diary of a Wimpy Kid!

Creating Word Detectives

We all want our children to be word detectives.  Here’s a fun way to encourage your child to analyze words while also building sight word vocabulary.

I’m Thinking of a Word – sight word game

-Have your child take out their sight word bag.

-Place the sight words in front of you.

-Select a word and give a clue so your child can “find” the word.

Some clues you may use are:

  • I’m thinking of a word that has two letters and starts with the letter u. (sight word: up)
  • I’m thinking of a word that has three letters and starts like the word cat.  (sight word: bat)
  • I’m thinking of a word that has four letters and rhymes with hook. (sight word: look)
