I considered myself a writer when I had a purpose and an authentic audience. I wish that I could say that this happened in kindergarten but I actually found the power of the written word in high school. How can we help our young children become writers? Make it authentic!
Provide Authentic Writing Opportunities:
-The writing task needs to be engaging and have a clear purpose. This will give children the opportunity to write about something that they have knowledge of.
Ensure That There is a Real Audience:
-We need to know our audience when we’re writing. The tone and language a child will use for friends and classmates is very different from those used with family members or business owners.
As parents, you hold the key to encouraging your child to write. Let your child see you write daily and explain to them your audience and purpose for writing. Even if you’re writing a daily journal entry to yourself, this lesson will show your child that you value the power of being a writer!
