Dear Parent or Guardian:

All 9^th grade students will shortly begin Unit 2, this unit focuses on the Essential Question: How does class, religion, language, and cultural stereotypes influence how one would look at and understand the world? The 9^th Grade Language Arts Team has selected a number of texts for students to read that address this topic; students will have the option to select their primary text. All books chosen for this unit are valuable reads that address our essential question from varied perspectives, these books may contain mature language and themes.

The justification for these books are:

• Each is well written and recognized as an appropriate grade-level text
• The selections raise political, social, and human rights issues that are important and relevant to the topic
• These texts offer an opportunity for students to gain perspective on the issue within different contexts
• These books were selected for their young adult appeal and their potential to motivate our students to read.

If you have any questions or concerns please contact us as soon as possible. We are including short descriptions to further inform you about the books.

The above link will take you to the index of e-resources from MEL. There are test prep tutorials and practice tests on the Learning Express Library that could be helpful for students.  If there are any questions please see Mrs. Hmayed in the library.

Use of MEL at home might require a driver’s license or library card and use of the test prep does require an email address so students can create accounts.
