LA2 Update

Hello!

I hope this finds you and your family well. I hope that you are staying safe during this time. You are each missed very much!

This update is a bit long but please read it through carefully there are a few updates and changes for the course expectations that we need to share.

As we returned from Spring Break yesterday, many may have noticed that new assignments were posted and some assignments have been entered in the grade book. Right now this is being done to keep track of your hard work and help facilitate feedback. Please make sure that you are aware of due dates and are submitting assignments in a timely manner.

All Google Classroom assignments labled “quarantine assignment” will be entered in the grade book as a single assignment in the extra credit category, your score will appear as your grade in Google Classroom- these will be posted to the Student/Parent Connect grade book after this Friday.

Many have asked if they can resubmit assignments, absolutely! Please continue to rework assignments and send me an email to reevaluate the assignment when you have finished. If you have not yet submitted your Animal Farm essay you may still do so. Also, don’t forget your Book Talks! Those that have already submitted their book talk have done great! We are looking forward to seeing more soon.

This week’s assignments are focused around Act I, Prologue of “The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet.” Please use the resources posted in Google Classroom to understand the text. I will host a Hangout at 3pm on Wednesday to discuss the Prologue, the link to the meeting will be posted in Google Classroom.

Moving forward we will also be utilizing iXL, all students should have their login information at this time. These assignments will be entered into the grade book. This week’s skill is Context Clues U.1-3. If you are experiencing any issues with iXL please email me your questions or concerns.

Please try to read your email daily, if you have not yet signed up for the class Remind please do so – the sign up code is at the top of the Google Classroom “Stream.”

If you have any questions or concerns please email me.

Stay safe!

Book Talks and Finding Books During Quarantine

As you are aware we are in a state of crisis and with the order to remain in our homes it may be difficult to find something good to read, I hope this post will help you find a good read.

Find a Book Online

This is a list of online options to find books to keep reading and growing your Lexile level. Remember we have a goal of +1200 to achieve or maintain by graduation.

  • Overdrive App – If you have a library card, download this app to access e-books and audio-book.
  • Michigan Electronic Library – A library card or driver’s licence/state ID is needed to access materials – including test-prep/practice materials.
  • National Emergency Library – Here is another resource for getting books, there are over a million books in this collection available through June 30 or the end of the national emergency. Students will need to know the title they are looking for and use the search feature.  There are classics and current books contained here.
  • Audible Stories– This site is free while schools are closed.
  • Bluford Books Audios – If you enjoyed The Test or The Gun check out this site, a selection of the Bluford Books have free audios available.
  • Open Culture – This site has a selection of free audio books and some e-books, these tend to be classics.
  • Project Gutenberg – This site has a large selection of e-books, mainly classics
  • Librivox – This site has a collection of free public domain audio-books
  • English Language Learning: Listen and Read – This is a varied collection of audio-books with some popular titles (Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist, Looking for Alaska, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, etc.) and authors (Stephen King, Markus Zusak, etc.)
  • Lit2Go – A collection of e-books in the public domain.

If you don’t have a library card-

Dearborn Public Library has set up a way for residents of Dearborn/Dearborn Heights to remotely register for temporary Dearborn Public Library cards.  These cards will allow access to all Dearborn Public Library electronic materials.  Instructions and highlights of available eResources is available through the following link:  https://dearbornlibrary.org/wordpress/need-a-temporary-library-card/

BOOK TALKS! Share what you are reading on Flip Grid.

This will be the platform that we will be using for Book Talks going forward, for the remainder of Semester 2. You can complete up to 4 Book Talks for credit this semester.

Still Learning

A message from Mrs. Alcodray:

Hello Students,

I just wanted to update you on the fast-moving situation regarding our online classes. This afternoon, Governor Gretchen Whitmer expressed her “dismay” about the Michigan Department of Education’s statement, releasing her own statement assuring educators and parents that this time could possibly count. The MDE released its original statement because in order for our time to count, the Michigan legislature must change the law; the MDE has no power here. So what does that mean for us? It is very possible—even likely—that our time online will count. So keep working. Our state lawmakers do not want to anger parents and educators across the state. So let’s keep our momentum going.

The above link will take you to the index of e-resources from MEL. There are test prep tutorials and practice tests on the Learning Express Library that could be helpful for students.  If there are any questions please see Mrs. Hmayed in the library.

Use of MEL at home might require a driver’s license or library card and the use of the test prep does require an email address so students can create accounts.
