Open House

Dear Parents,

Please join us Thursday, September 6, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. for our annual Open House and Title I informational meeting.

You will have an opportunity to follow your student’s schedule, meet his or her teachers, and learn about the curriculum for each of your child’s classes.

In our continued effort to make DHS a “Green” school, you will need to complete the bottom portion of this letter and bring it with you to follow your child’s schedule; copies of student schedules will not be available that night. You may access your child’s schedule through the Parent Connect portal. Please contact Ms. Berry for information regarding Parent Connect at 313-827-1612. National Honor Society students will be located throughout the building to assist you.

Please remember that Open House is not a time to discuss individual students. If you have an individual concern, please phone or e-mail your student’s teacher or counselor to schedule a meeting. Parent-Teacher conferences are scheduled for October 15th & October 17th.

I look forward to meeting you at our Open House as we work together to strengthen our school-home partnership providing your student with a successful and memorable year.

Sincerely,

Adam Martin

Principal

Notes From Mr. Martin

Parents,

It has been a great first couple of days, thank you for all of your support! Please remember to drive safely when picking up or dropping off your students and to pull all the way forward in the circle drive.

Next week, Thursday, September 6th, is our Open House and Title I informational meeting. The Title I informational meeting will be from 5:30-5:55 in the auditorium and Open House from 6:00-7:30. Attached are flyers that provide more information; please know your student’s schedule before coming and plan on meeting their teachers as we won’t be passing them out. Open House will be just that, open; you will have the flexibility to meet and greet teachers at your convenience.

Next Friday, September 7th is Picture Day for all students. You received information in your summer packets to order pictures. Every student will get their picture taken for their student ID’s and will get them then; please encourage them to smile brightly! Also next Friday all 9th graders are invited to the Freshman Tailgate for our home football game against Belleville. The tailgate begins at 5:30 pm on the hill; students will have food, play some games, and then get to experience their 1st official high school football game for free. We’d love to see them all in their DHS t-shirts received at orientation and you’re invited back to join us for the game at 7.

Lastly, I’ve included an attachment that provides dates for all the major events and created a google calendar that you can access and add to your calendar by following this link: https://calendar.google.com/calendar?cid=ZGVhcmJvcm5zY2hvb2xzLm9yZ19xbGZsY2lpZmkwNDB1MmpqMGphNXNrcGgxb0Bncm91cC5jYWxlbmRhci5nb29nbGUuY29t Please know we will make every effort to update the calendar if there are changes as well as through email.

Thanks

Mr. Martin

Notes for the end of the school year.

Hello Parents,

Well, we’ve made it to our final full week of school for the year. A few things to note as we are winding down the year.

All library books that are still checked out need to be returned by the end of the day tomorrow. On Friday, all students will participate in a locker clean out. Besides their textbooks, there shouldn’t be anything left in their lockers. Please tell them to bring home all of their personal items. Next week, lockers should only be used for their textbooks, which will be getting collected.

Speaking of next week, all students are required to take their final exam. That said, Dearborn Public Schools and DHS understand that the Eid El Iftar Holiday may be June 14 which is our scheduled last day of school. Therefore, we have moved our final exam schedule one day earlier, possibly starting on Monday, June 11.  A half day of school is still scheduled to be in session on June 14 but there will not be any final exams on this day.

As a District we plan our school calendars in advance and when planning the 17-18 school year we adjusted the calendar based on the information we had at the time which was that the Eid El Iftar may be June 15 or June 16.  We recently discussed the date with local Islamic Clergy and there is a possibility that the Eid El Iftar may be June 14.

We understand that students who are celebrating the Eid El Iftar may not be in session but we must still take regular attendance.   We appreciate your understanding and your patience on this matter and have included our final exam schedule for this year for your reference.

Senior Reminders

As a reminder, tonight Tuesday, May 29th is our Senior Honors Ceremony for invited students. All senior honors students should arrive by 6:20  in their gowns, no caps. The program begins at 7:00 pm. There is a state playoff girls soccer game occurring that evening too, so please add some extra time to find parking.

Last Thursday, I met with students and reminded them about some important things before they received their cap and gowns. I included a few of those points here:

  • Senior students shouldn’t be on any DPS property unless they have official business; specifically they should not be near Edsel Ford or Fordson.

  • The dress for both senior honors and commencement is dressy. Boys a collared shirt, no jeans, no shorts, dressy shoes. Girls, dress appropriate for the day; consider wearing flats as heels on the grass at commencement and coming down steps at honors can cause problems. Students in shorts or jeans will not participate.

  • Friday, June 8th is commencement rehearsal at 9:00 am in the auditorium. You have to be in attendance if you are planning on walking at graduation. If you are not at rehearsal you will not participate. If there is a legitimate conflict, you must contact me prior to rehearsal beginning martina@dearbornschools.org.

  • June 9th is commencement and the senior party. We begin lining up at 5:25 on the Tennis Courts, this is the only time you need your cap. Make sure you are on time as we will begin without you.

Do not decorate your caps, bring water bottles, bring noise-makers, inflatable balloons, or anything else that will distract the ceremony including flips, dancing, or anything else after you cross the stage; you’re the main attraction but so is everyone else. After commencement, you’re going to need to get your diploma and then following that is the senior party.

  • At commencement, our expectation is that we all enjoy ourselves within reason and respect the event. Do not spoil the event for your families, friends, or yourself..

Thanks

Mr. Martin
